Indian-Americans lash out at US Senator
By Sridhar Krishnaswami in Washington | Friday, 07 July , 2006, 12:03 | |
Ranking Democrat in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph Biden, who allegedly made comments belittling Indian Americans, has come under attack from an organisation representing the community. Senator Biden during his recent trip to New Hampshire told an Indian American activist that "in Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 [a chain store] or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking". Slamming Biden for making "ridiculous comments" about the community, the Indian Americans Republican Council said, "Joe Biden has a history of making insensitive and inappropriate remarks. But even for him, this recent gaffe is clearly over the top. But this isn't the first time a Senate Democrat has insulted Indian Americans," IARC chairman Dr Vijay said. "In 2004, Senator John Kerry referred to Sikhs as terrorists and Senator Hillary Clinton jokingly referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a gas station owner. A clear double-standard in the mainstream media will likely ensure Senator Biden gets a pass over these comments that would get a Republican in deep trouble if he ever made a similar statement," he said. The chairman of IARC said, "Senator Biden will be surprised to hear that I am a cardiothoracic surgeon, leading a national association of Indian Americans who are physicians, attorneys, and small business owners." "It's amazing to know we don't all work at Dunkin Donuts or the local 7/11. The contributions to America by Indian Americans in the fields of medicine, education, science, and business have been well-documented," Dr Vijay said in a statement. "We're not asking Senator Biden to apologise for his embarrassing, stereotypical comments. However, we do appreciate knowing what he really thinks of his Indian American constituents in Delaware," he added. Biden, who is tipped to be one of the potentials to seek the party's nomination for the 2008 presidential elections, was one of the lawmakers who endorsed the Indo-US nuclear deal last week. |
check this out.

Singh it, brother.
Way to go Joe...
I wish I could have seen his handler's faces as that remark came out of his mouth. He is such a maroon. What can you expect from someone who doesn't see anything wrong with plagiarizing. He needs more handlers to protect him from himself.
good one!
""We're not asking Senator Biden to apologise for his embarrassing, stereotypical comments. However, we do appreciate knowing what he really thinks of his Indian American constituents in Delaware," he added."
That's gonna leave a mark!
Ouch! Well, looks like Biden will get his wish, to just stay home and make love to his wife while the (adult) kiddies are asleep.
"The contributions to America by Indian Americans in the fields of medicine, education, science, and business have been well-documented."
As well as information technology.
Joe Biden ain't called the smartest man in Congress for nothing!
What idiots the dems are. The average Indian probably has a higher IQ alone than Kerry, Hillary, and Biden have together.
Last night on H&C, Colmes made light of it. It was no big deal to him.
Hello!!! US MEDIA!!! HELLO!!!! Are you there???!!!
Oh that's right, it's not a Republican or Trent Lott saying these things, so you're okay with it. Surely the media darling and media whore Joe Biden must have had only the purest of motives when he made these comments, unlike what would be the case if he was one of those mean, racist Republicans!!!

I guess when you have diahhrea of the mouth like the Senate's biggest blowhard, Joe Biden, you increase your chances of saying dumb things. The problem is, most everything Joe Biden says is dumb so it's hard to distinguish one nitwit remark from another...
Remember Biden's "Gee Boss" harangue of Condi Rice in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee?
"Gee Boss, you say some awfully dumb things Boss. Gee Boss, maybe you ought to learn to put a muzzle on it. Gee Boss, maybe you need to read some books about Indian-Americans and their contributions to America."
Now there is an intelligent statement. Most would be demanding an apology. But an apology in such circumstances would ring hollow and be absolutely worthless.
This gentlemen recognizes this - and, tongue in cheek, let's Biden know it will not be forgotten.
So....is Russert gonna give him the entire hour on Meet the dePressed to explain himself.
Or is he booked on all of the other Sunday shows too?
Excellent!
