Angelides says he would sign gay marriage bill

SAN FRANCISCO - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides said Friday that if he unseats Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in November he would sign a bill legalizing gay marriage in California.

Angelides talked about the issue the day after New York's high court upheld that state's one-man, one-woman marriage laws and as a California appeals court prepared to consider whether a trial judge erred in declaring the state's marriage laws unconstitutional.

"I would sign the marriage equality bill because I believe if we can get behind people to build a lasting relationship, that is a good thing," Angelides said at a news conference where Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., urged voters to support him.

The California Legislature last year became the first lawmaking body in the nation to legalize gay marriage. Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill, saying it was up to voters or the courts, not lawmakers, to settle the matter.

The measure's sponsor, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, plans to reintroduce it in December after the election.

Clinton, who does not support gay marriage, refused to answer questions about Thursday's court ruling in her home state, but made a brief pitch on Angelides' behalf.

I hope those who endlessly b-tch about Schwarzenegger on Free Republic will see the kinds of things that are at stake in this election seeing what Angelides is saying here. Yes Arnold with a DEMOCRATIC CONTROLLED ASSEMBLY has not totally eliminated the deficit, but he's shrunk it significantly. Yes, Arnold is spending more than we'd like. But do we think the alternative is better? Spending would be a lot higher AS WELL AS TAXES if Arnold had not won the recall. We all know that.

Think of Arnold as a hockey goalie of sorts. He likely won't score many goals for the conservative cause but he'll do a hell of a job, as he's been doing, keeping the worst liberal left fantasies from being fufilled. We need a governor who will stop the wacko Democratic Assembly from getting much through the net. And that includes their never-ending obsession with raising our taxes and providing driver's licenses for illegals.

In the meantime, I have full confidence that not needing to stand for re-election in 2010 that a re-elected Arnold can move to the right on some things. But keep in mind his hands have always been tied on how much he can get done with this extremist, out-there state Assembly we have.

We need to stop letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, conservatives and support this man come November, regardless of the fact he can't govern as a far right conservative! The alternative is too nauseating to even consider: going back to one party, Democratic rule in California. Ugggh...

Hey, I've always been on Arnold's side. Not that it matters since I'm not a California resident.

I b*tch about Arnold. I figure I have the right to do so, since I voted for him in the recall election. But even though he is a HUGE disappointment, I will be voting for him in November.

I don't dispute your right to b-tch about Arnold. I only ask that we look at what's at stake in this election and weigh that against whatever disappointment we may have in him. I think when you do that, you realize we have got to get out and support him in November or we're doomed as a state!

Pardon my ignorance, but if this is such a terrible issue, why didn't Rinold step in to stop Gays in San Fran from getting married?

Ahnuld is forced to look like he is gay-friendly, without actually supporting the offending legislation. Angelides is such a leftist swine that he doesn't care.

Schwarzenegger did just that by ordering the state Attorney General to stop them. Read on... http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/02/21/MNGEP55KO81.DTL

Don't be so quick to bash the governor without having all the facts. As the Geico caveman said "next time, do a little research."

The Gubinor previously has left it up to the courts to decide and said he will abide by their decision.

That doesn't mean the people could not pass another initiative again agianst gay marriage however, nothing new.

He would abide by theirs as well.

He likes to cover all the bases.

Personally, this Angelides guy has never been on my radar. Not even for a bleep of a second. To me it is like Cindy Sheehan running for Governor--it is a joke and I wouldn't even for a millisec consider voting for her. It is odd to me that anyone who FREEPS would even consider such a slimy, liberal rat, unless they are trolling or just a liberal member.

It's not that I worry about anyone on here voting for Wimpy Angelides, I worry about them sitting out the election or wasting their vote on a 3rd party nobody.

Actually, it did happen--last September. And Arnold vetoed it.

Of course, had he not, there IS a method for recourse--referendum.

I understand. I think in some ways you have a valid concern in that: 1)He is such an extreme candidate I could easily doubt that many would vote for him, which could make me let my guard down a bit or 2)Arnold has pissed off and disappointed a lot of Republicans and they may show that come election day in their enthusiasm or lack there of.

My thought is the extreme positions of Angelides will push even the least enthusiastic of Republicans to vote on election day for Governor, as well as many moderate people in general. But I guess now is the time to address what the possible areas of concern are so as to address the possible strategies to insure Angelides doesn't get in.
