It was in the mid-6th century that the Dark Ages began. Professor Mike Baillie believes it was an asteroid(s) or comet fragment(s) that initiated that period. Might the asteroid/comet impact be what caused this earthquake?

Tsunami too?

This was obviously caused by Halliburton, under orders from Karl Rove.

Volkswanderung was not a comet. It was worse. Besides, a global impact would show in the Chinese records, too.

Just like Californians, they keep building over known fault lines.

Some sort of tidal wave action would make sense with the greater damage at the city vs. the necropolis on higher ground.

That being said, we are dealing with unreinforced stone work here. The height of the buildings in the city compared to the necropolis may also explain the difference in damage levels.

There's plenty of strong earthquakes in the Eastern Mediterranean from normal tectonic sources.

Interestingly it does seem there were a LOT more quakes there in Old Testament through Roman times through the early Byzantine period than there are today. An unusual lull now.

Thanks Blam. The answer is, there were undersea earthquakes during the Pelopponesian War, as remarked by Thucydides and others. Judging from some remarks in the Iliad, the same was true of the time of the Trojan War.

Islam or an Earthquake?

Anemurium

About 6 km southwest of Anamur, on the southernmost tip of Asia Minor, slumber the ruins of the ancient settlement of Anemurium, meaning "windy cape" (anemos means wind in Greek). The city was founded by the Phoenicians in the 12th or 13th century BC and was later occupied by the Assyrians and Hittites. Anemurium flourished during the Roman period and became a great trading centre. The city was at its peak during the 3rd century AD and most remains date from that period. In the 7th century AD Arab corsairs raided and pillaged the coast and Anamurium was abandoned and left alone as a Byzantine ghost town.

The Dark Ages in the middle east didn't begin until the 7th century.

In Turkey they don't begin until the 10th century.
