Networking: Consumers eying home networks
UPI ^ | July 10, 2006 | UPI

New research indicates that demand for home networks -- to connect home theaters, security cameras, home lighting systems, and the like -- is increasing rapidly, even though the percentage of new homes which feature these broadband powered networks still remains relatively small. Experts are telling United Press International's Networking column that many home buyers are asking builders to install the networks as a standard feature in new homes today. By Gene Koprowski

Duh! Gigabit switches and cards are dirt cheap ... and 802.11 stuff isn't far behind.

That reminds me of the Furby-powered parallel-processing cluster computer. The page with the info doesn't seem to be available any more, so I can't link to any humorous photos or anything.

Duh. When I remodeled my previous home, I cabled every room for 100 mbps ethernet. That was in 1996. These guys are way behind the times.

The thing is that it's now all obsolete, basically. I wouldn't do it again, but would rely on wireless networking.

Wireless is the way to go. I've got mine and my kids' computers networked plus their X-box. Also have several wireless security cameras that I can access from work via the web. Neat.

If you're building a new house, there's no reason not to cable it. Sure, have wireless available for those times when you want to move a laptop around, but a cable in the wall is much more reliable/faster/secure and is really the best primary connection. Plus, the cabling can be used for other things if you're not going to use it for networking, like HDTV distribution.

Yup. Wireless is the way to go these days, for sure. Actually, I have a hybrid system in my home. My wife's work computer and my work computer are hardwired to a router. Everything else is wireless.

There is one advantage to hard-wired networks. They don't broadcast the network and they are solidly faster all the time. Still, for most purposes, wireless is just fine, as long as you have decent protection installed.

A funny note, though, on all of this. There's a guy across the street from me who has a bunch of wireless stuff on his network, including cameras. Trouble is, his network is open as a library. When I got my new Dell notebook and turned it on, the first thing I saw was this guy's unprotected network. Took me about five minutes to start looking through his cameras. One was in his bedroom.

Uffda! I had a little chat with the guy and we fixed up his password protection for his wireless network. He literally did not have any idea that anyone else could access his network.

I notified him of his risk by printing a little note out on his printer from my notebook.

Take your notebook and drive around neighborhoods in almost any town. It's amazing how many unprotected wireless networks there are out there. Funny stuff.

lolz.

Have always wanted to print out the file documents named "confidential" or "private" that people leave in their file-sharing folders and mail 'em to the addresses mentioned therein.

I built a home last year and had smurf tubes put in everywhere. I'll be pulling cat-6 sometime soon, but when that's obsolete, I'll slide 'em out and pull optical fibers (or whatever else is in vogue).

It was way too much effort to try to wire my house, so the machines remained in one room until I put in wireless. Now the machines are beginning to sprout around the house.

Well, shame on you! [grin]. It's amazing how many unprotected little networks there are out there. I am rarely in a place without one. It's wrong to steal someone else's connection, but how can you resist.

I do draw the line at snooping around their system, though. Lots of folks share all their resources within the network, but don't bother to protect the network. Amazing!
