Harris Retracts Donation To Fix House(KH FL)
CBS ^ | 07/17/2006 | unk

Katherine Harris has taken back $100,000 of the $3.5 million she gave her campaign for Senate. The reason: she's finishing renovating her home in Washington, D.C.

The Harris campaign says the Republican congresswoman would sell the house, if necessary, to fund her embattled Senate race.

The campaign announced Harris repaid some of the money she already gave the campaign in a press release detailing fund-raising for the three months ending June 30.

The campaign says Harris has raised $1.1 million in donations during the quarter. By comparison, Senator Bill Nelson, D-Fla., raised $2.5 in the same quarter.

The announcement comes the same week Harris lost much of her core campaign staff for the second time since getting in the race last summer. Her campaign manager, Glenn Hodas, resigned after three months on the job, saying Harris was uncontrollable.

Hodas said Harris "hasn't kept any of her promises," about her behavior, including those "not to have tantrums, not to berate staff, not to micromanage and nitpick, and not to get flustered on inconsequential details," the Palm Beach Post reported.

Hodas lamented Harris' recent decision to criticize Sen. Nelson's acceptance of campaign contributions from Riscorp, an insurance company tied to a massive campaign finance scandal involving Florida politicians in the 1990s. Harris had also received money from Riscorp and her 1994 state senate campaign manager was named as a co-conspirator for attempting to cover-up the source of the money, the Palm Beach Post said.

"We had more to lose on Riscorp than anyone else," Hodas argued.

Someone needs to slather this old girl with butter and jam, 'cause she's toast.

She might have done well if she had stayed on that horse out of reach of a microphone. Her chances are dim to none at this point.

You must admit that she does look better than Bill Nelson.

She should have remained in her House seat, and she could have had a long career. Wonder how many tried to give her that exact advise?

She reminds me of one of Bob Grahams races.

Harris will get the core republicans, Perhaps a minimum 25% of the vote. It will be at least a 10% victory for Nelson ONLY BECAUSE HARRIS RAN (PAST TENSE) POOR CAMPAIGN.

This is like loosing to the court jester.

I like her in 2000, and I liked her when she made her house run, but I have seen her change and become IMO a tad arrogant.

I have often wondered if her head has gotten a little large lately.

It is a shame.

People get power and do a 180.

I am stll sure, she would make a better senator than Nelson, but that outcome looks dim!

What did Bill Nelson ever do to get such incredible luck?

I cannot recall a candidate who has collected worse press clippings than Ms. Harris. If she wins, it will be an act of God!

If she wins, it will be an act of God!

I think that's her line of thinking as well.

I feel sorry for all of the Freepers who have defended Mrs. Harris throughout her campaign. I admire their loyalty. But the fact is, she is not a fit candidate for the US Senate. Mrs. Harris should have remained in her House seat in Sarasota, now she is going to be humiliated and the FL GOP with her.

That's a pity.

More pitiful is the apparent free ride that Bill Nelson is going to get out of this.

....You are so right...as a congresswoman she could hold her own....but she is in over her head at this next level.. but hey...hopefully we all learn our limitations from our mistakes.....unfortunately, it takes us down with her
