Iranian missile explodes from truck

Iranian missile explodes from truck

A LONG-RANGE Iranian-made missile capable of reaching Israel's leading city, Tel Aviv, launched skyward from a bombed truck convoy east of Beirut before crashing to earth, Lebanese military officials have confirmed.

After initially suspecting the spiralling fireball was a downed Israeli warplane, officials now believe it was evidence of the most serious threat to Israel's main cities yet to emerge in the week-long conflict.

"No Israeli aircraft has been hit over Beirut. All of the air force planes and helicopters have been accounted for," an army spokesman said.

The Zilzal missile has a much bigger warhead than those that have rained down on northern Israel for the past week, and an advanced guidance system. It exploded after a convoy of trucks travelling over a mountain pass into south Beirut was attacked by an F-16 jet.

Israel has stepped up its attacks on suspected supply lines for Hezbollah, bombing two truck convoys north of the capital yesterday and another in a loading bay outside the Beirut port.

Officials at the scene, in a narrow valley near a military base, told The Australian they suspected the convoy had come from Syria, but they were not sure when it crossed the border. Up to six trucks lay in ruins on the road, with the one, believed to have been carrying the missile, obliterated across the mountain side.

An enormous black plume rose from an adjoining tyre dump set ablaze by the explosion, which had earlier led locals to claim it was the scene of a jet fighter crash. The road was blackened and dotted with two enormous craters.

As The Australian looked over the truck ruins, high-ranking Lebanese military officers arrived to inspect the damage.

"Why would an Australian be interested in this?" a brigadier asked suspiciously, before trying to open the rear door of the only truck left intact.

Hezbollah is believed to have only a few Zilzal missiles, which are among the most advanced in the Iranian armoury. It has a range of up to 200km, bringing Tel Aviv, or the nearby city of Herzilya, well into range.

Hezbollah has so far fired more than 1500 rockets at Israel since the conflict erupted and Israel claims to have destroyed only a fifth of the group's capability.

The Iranian Defence chief yesterday praised the actions of Hezbollah fighters, whom Tehran has financed and supported for the past decade.

Major General Hasan Firuzabadi, head of the Iranian Armed Forces General Command Headquarters, said the organisation's "surprising defensive operations have harmed the Zionist entity".

"The operation against an Israeli missile-boat, near the Beirut coastline, had great military significance," he continued.

Four Israeli sailors were killed in the attack and a warship severely damaged.

The Iranian Foreign Minister is in Damascus where he is believed to be holding discussions with Syrian officials about leaning on Hezbollah to scale back attacks, for fear of an imminent regional conflict.

More than 170 Lebanese civilians have now been killed, along with 20 Israelis. Hundreds more have been wounded on both sides, while up to 25 Lebanese soldiers have also been killed.

Israel has continued to reject calls for a ceasefire, insisting it will destroy Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and then create a buffer zone to ensure it does not return.

Sounds like a reliability problem with the missile. One could hope that there is a failure trend with these missiles.

Good point! Let's take this valley and make it into a radioactive parking lot. I'll bet it looks "better" than this:

Besides, this valley comprises 40% of Lebanon's arable land. You know the saying, if you go to sleep with the dogs you'll wake up with fleas!

How does a convoy of six trucks come across a border without some Lebanese official checking to see what was in the trucks?

The news in the west is a shame and one sided. Now we have reporters, who claim to be military experts without ever having served a day in the military. I do not listen to the MSM period. Please remember that these reporters were among the most liberal students in college. They do not change their views when they change networks.

Another disproportionate Israeli attack on the road system. Probably killed the civilian truck driver. And the civilian crew.

From Best of the Web: Some have criticized Israel for not responding proportionately to the attacks, but we'd counsel patience. After all, the Israelis aren't done yet.

So how many compose the remaining 4/5 of the group's capability? I tried to extrapolate, but failed.

Israel needs to mount an all-out offensive before these guys pull back, acquire international cover, and begin to get their arms stocks resupplied by the Iranians.

And before Nasrullah is elected President of Lebanon.

I don't know. But if there are only 3 roads from Syria into Lebanon, how did all those rockets get into the country without Lebanon allowing them to?

Am I the only one who's noted that the media has yet to announce a single combatant killed in Lebanon, they're all civilians.

Do-gooders act on feelings, they don't think through the consequences of their actions. I'll give them a benefit of the doubt, they don't really want evil to triumph, it's just by saying "no" to any action, they would hamstring themselves into an action paralysis, and evil needs nothing else to triumph.

Recent examples. They think Geneva Convention IS a good thing. But the purpose of Geneva is to force all warring sides to fight by the rules. Those who is not following the rules will be outside of the goodwill of the Geneva. Very simple. Now, enter the bleeding heart who wants EVERYONE to be covered by Geneva, even those who don't follow it. The result is going to be predictable: the bad guys will not feel ANY obligation and will feel no pressure to fight by the rules -- something that Geneva was designed to prevent. So, they think Geneva IS a good thing, but their actions actively undermine it.

Another example. They sincere do want Palestinians to have a better life. But, they find excuses for all actions of the most radical elements. They would never excuse exactly the same actions perpetrated by practically anybody else. The result is also quite predictable: any moderating forces are gone or silenced, and new generation is brainwashed into anti-humanitarian-as-it-can-be death cult. Any hope for the better is killed with every new excuse.

In your example: majority of liberals looks like does understand that it would be better for Lebanon if Hezbollah just disappeared. But by undermining any Israeli action they will make sure that Israel will be forced to stop, and Hezbollah will survive.

I don't like Michael Savage's style, but he is dead right: liberalism is a mental disease.

That is understandable. It's an apples and oranges situation. The total numbers are hard to get a handle on, because the IDF has likely successfully blown up a good several thousand themselves already...and if Hezbollah has successfully fired 1,500 on Israel...that means a rough number of the reduction could be in the 4,000-5,000 ball park. If that is what they mean by 1/5th...we have a long way to go. It's just speculation, but the IDF could be looking at having some 20,000 left to take out...

No kidding. But if true, it would demonstrate this Iranian leader is not all bombast, but displays a cunning patience...the old "rope a dope" strategy...trying to hood-wink Israel into "negotiations" or "UN" policing again (= NON-Policing).

Israel, the only nation that wins on the battlefield, but has to sue for peace in negotiations.

Do-gooders act on feelings, they don't think through the consequences of their actions.

Some are died in the wool dogoders. Others are supporters of terror, perhaps discriminating in terms of who the victim is, but that's not a popular position to take.

I want to know how so many could be smuggled into the country. Are there no border guards other than Hezbollah? Did the government just hand over the country to them?
