Smith, Wyden to Bush: Sign bill
Statesman Journal (Oregon) ^ | July 19, 2006 | Dennis Camire

Posted on 07/19/2006 9:57:41 PM PDT by WaterDragon

Oregon's two senators voted with the Senate majority Tuesday to overturn the president's limits on embryonic stem-cell research, setting the stage for the first veto of the Bush administration.

"Please, Mr. President, don't veto this bill," said Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., noting that his family has a history of Parkinson's disease. "Such a veto, I fear, may only throw out hope, healing and human life along with the unused embryos."

Sixty-three senators voted to allow federally funded researchers to conduct medical research on surplus embryos from fertility clinics. The bipartisan vote was enough to move the bill to the president's desk for signature but fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to override the expected veto.

The vote represented a rare schism between the White House and the Republican-controlled Congress and highlighted the ideological divide within the GOP ranks.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said scientists think stem cells offer the possibility to treat myriad diseases and disabilities, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, strokes, diabetes, spinal-cord injuries and osteoarthritis.

"I see no reason why embryonic stem-cell research should be treated any differently than other research," Wyden said. "Without expanding the research beyond the bounds of current policy, people will never know what might have been."

Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., is battling cancer and, like many other sick and injured Americans, hopes embryonic stem-cell research will yield a cure. He described a conversation he had with his conservative colleague Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.

"He said his concern was the question of when life began,".....(snip)

Do these people also support the trade in organs from executed political prisoners in China because, well, they were going to be killed anyway? I mean just because the Chinese make money off of organs from prisoners isn't going to encourage them to kill more political prisoners for their organs, right?

These idiots can't spell science and aren't interested in the 20 years of failed research in the area of Embryonic Stem Cells.
There is NO medical promise in this area!
IF there were ANY, then private funding would be flooding this area, just as it is in the area of ADULT stem cell research, which has over 70 patents.
The ONLY reason Embryonic stem cells are being promoted is to PRETEND there is merit to abortion!

From the article, you would think that embryonic stem cell research is the only type of medical research.

...like many other sick and injured Americans, hopes embryonic stem-cell research will yield a cure.

Taking the life of innocent children in a misguided effort to extend the lives of others is morally reprehensible. We're all dealt the life we have and in that life we have unlimited numbers of choices to make. Some of those choices reap the benefits of various diseases and other maladies we must contend with while other choices provide health, happiness and success.
Ending the life of an innocent to "hopefully (but not likely)" extend for a few years the life of one that is going to die sooner than the child would if allowed to live, is nothing more than arrogant selfishness in my opinion.

If a person fears death so much that he/she must terminate the life of a child on the slim change he/she may live a little longer then might I suggest said person/s repent and receive Jesus Christ as his/her Lord and savior.
Outside of Christ there is no real "HOPE!"

If Dubyah says he will veto the bill, you can take it to the bank.

I hope he puts the RINOs in their correct place and then begins to kick their asses. Its long overdue. And I hope he does the same to any amnesty bill on illegal aliens.

You nailed it my friend! The abortion issue is one which is becoming less justifiasble in America , especially for those who know what it looks like, and this photo is tame compared tp others that may be seen:

Yep, there is no scientific reason for research using human embryonic stem cells. The mechanisms of cell differentiation are no more likely to reveal themselves by using human embryonic stem cells than using other primate stem cells, or lesser mammal stem cells.

Adult stem cell research has born more fruit because it has been pursued through methodical, scientifically sound research starting with and continuing with the study of non-human mammalian stem cell lines. Embryonic stem cell researches want to skip past the hard work and years of methodical, repetitive experimentation and they hope a cure will occur miraculously and magically.

And you would think that Bush has outlawed research into embryonic stem cells. Not a single story or a single idiotic senator ever thanks Bush for being THE ONLY PERSON IN HISTORY to authorize Federal funds FOR the freakin' research!!!

And these liberal pukes have whined for 20 years about SDI because 'it costs billions and it will never work, and we don't need it'. Well, I think I could much more easily say the same thing about embryonic stem cell research. I own a few different biotech companies' stock. They have all spent buttloads of money on this and have stopped because there is no success in sight and no patents on the horizon from it. They are, instead, looking at more obvious and easier to get stem cells which actually ARE producing patents.

This whole issue is plagued by a bunch of uneducated morons who like to "feel" intelligent about advancing science by making asinine commentary. Frankenstein medicine...

The greater question is never asked... What if they create something we cannot get rid of?
