ROANOKE A package sent to the home of golf legend Byron Nelson was detonated by a bomb squad after his wife and police believed the parcel looked suspicious. The contents turned out to include banners from the Masters and a letter, Roanoke Fire Department Chief Mike Duncan said. He said Nelson's wife, Peggy, called police Friday after deciding the writing on the package looked peculiar and noticed that the postage had not been canceled.
Remains from the package were given to police but Duncan said nothing appeared criminal. "We just have to err on the side of caution," Duncan said. Nelson, 94, won five majors in his career had one of the greatest years in golf history when he won 18 tournaments in 1945. His ranch in Roanoke is about 25 miles from where the Byron Nelson Championship is held in Irving.

Interesting that they overreacted like that. Someone been sending hate mail? His brother, Charles Nelson, is (was?) a fantastic singer (and a paraplegic). Wonder if Charles is still alive?

Byron Nelson still alive? Wow! He was contemporary of Ben Hogan, wasn't he?

I believe so. Didn't know Byron, but knew Charles personally. Moved away and don't know what has become of that fine gentleman. Man, he could sing! Still have a picture of him on archival black & white fiber base paper -- it will last for generations.

Reminds me of the time I shot out the tires on a UPS truck. It looked suspicious.
Or the time I took a pizza deliver guy hostage. Looked suspicious.
Oh, yeah, and the time I got that paper boy in a burmese tiger trap. Suspicious little dude. Never saw him again.

That's an alert senior citizen to notice the postage was not canceled.

I find it hard to believe that Byron Nelson would have an enemy, but there are crazy people out there.

Well, it is like with the spam e-mails. Sender looks suspicious, or the topic- and so one hits "spam" or "delete", without opening it.

Remains from the package were given to police but Duncan said nothing appeared criminal. "We just have to err on the side of caution," Duncan said.
I'm not so sure that when detonated, the bomb didn't do a little damage to Duncan's noggin.
