Liar! Liar! Brian Bilbray's Pants are on Fire! (Stem cell flip flop?)

There is an old joke that goes something like this.

Q. How do you know a politician is lying?

A. His lips are moving.

Obviously this catches the public's disgust with politicians that say one thing and do another. This is one of the reasons citizen's groups want things in writing. They send questionnaires out hoping to put these politicians in ink on various topics. They believe that at least having something writing will keep politicians honest.

In March of this year former Congressman Brian Bilbray was running for the 50th Congressional Seat after Duke Cunningham resigned in disgrace.

Bilbray had a mixed voting record on life issues, but he filled out a questionnaire for the National Right to Life Committee. I have posted it below.

He indicated that his votes if elected would be "better" than his last go around in Congress.

After the April Primary, the National Right to Life Committee spent money in an independent expenditure campaign against pro-abortion Democratic candidate Francine Busby. Radio ads and telephone calls told pro-life voters not to vote for Busby. This helped Bilbray's chances for victory. This actionwas obviously based on his answers to how he would vote should he win.

Bilbray indicated to me personally, when I met with him several days before the election, that he would be a much more conservative congressman should he win in June.

As we know he did win. Flash forward to August. President Bush uses his first veto to stop HR 810 that would force federal funding for all kinds of medical experimentation on human embryos. The House vote to override the veto fails. But this is the news. Bilbray votes to OVERRIDE the President’s veto. See roll call vote here.

Big deal except, Bilbray promised that he would support the President's policy IN WRITING. Again, attached is the questionnaire.

Look at question number four.

"Would you oppose any legislation that would authorize federal funding of research for which the killing of human embryos would be a predicate step or necessary?"

Bilbray answers yes after adding in writing. "I support President Bush’s policy of limiting research to existing lines of cells." Just so there is no mistaking his position look at the last page where he signs it. Bilbray adds. "On Question 4: I strongly support laws aggressively outlawing the creation of embryos for research purposes. I am opposed to any "sale" of human life in any form."

Al Gore changed his views on the Life issue when he began running for President. OK I get that. Did Bilbray suddenly have new information? No. It was not a new issue for him, look at his answers and writings. Bilbray went out of his way to decieve people.

Whether you agree with the President's policy or not is irrelevant. Fact is Brian Bilbray is the kind of man that would sign the Declaration of Independence and then join the British Navy. He is untrustworthy and it doesn't matter what he says OR puts in writing. Voters can't trust him. Brian Bilbray is a liar.

"Eric Roach start your engines."

As close as he was in the first election it's a shame that he didn't go all out in the primary, he would now be the Congressman!

Another so-called "conservatives" bashing Republicans article -- instead of focusing on the real enemy, the Dems.

You ever heard of infiltration by the "enemy"?

It isn't unheard of, nor is flip flopping by elected officials to get elected and stay elected.

The current theme in California seems to be 'Just win, Baby, and don't sweat the details'.

We see an awful lot of it in California politics of late.. and the (M)ilksters are not immune from both participating in supporting and encouraging those that seek the middle of the road thinking it is the safest and best way to advance their agendas after they seize power.

The only problem is , there is a lot of cross traffic and they usually get run over by folks from both sides of the aisle eventually.

I surely not only have heard of it, but see it right here on FR every day -- people claiming to be conservatives trying to defeat Republicans and get leftist liberals elected.

Thanks for giving me these great examples.

You clearly prefer leftists Marxist Dems getting elected, instead of moderate Republicans, claim to be a conservative and think nobody can add two and two together and get four, figuring out your agenda.

How typical that you would attack the conservative instead of the more reasonable reaction.

Your consistent lack of outrage at politicians who break campaign promises by taking liberal positions is duly noted and the agenda quite clear.

If a moderate republican spends like a drunken sailor, hops in the hot tub with the other side just to get budgets done, and then buys into Al Gore's latest ramblings, I guess that's your cup of tea.

At least you are honest. You are no conservative by any stretch of the imagination and continue to confirm as you hurl you pointed barbs to cover for that obvious fact..

Enjoy the tea, while it lasts.

According to some FR posters border security is the most important thing. I wonder what those posters think about Bilbray's "moderate stands" on social issues.

Some months ago, conservatives were roundly chastized by the RINO crowd for voting third party. Hopefully this race is an object lesson as to why liberal Republicans do not deserve the votes of conservatives.

I really like to see a primary contest between Chris Cannon and Brian Bilbray in a safe GOP seat. It really would test just how important immigration reform is to conservatives.
