{West Coast} Power company asks public to chill out on energy use

The demand for electricity has gone up right along with the temperature outside.

As a result, Pacific Power is encouraging customers to reduce electricity consumption.

Power companies, responding to widespread heat along the West Coast, are facing short electricity supplies and transmission constraints. Further action might be needed at some point, according to a Pacific Power release, to reduce pressure on the regional power grid.

The public will be notified if such actions are necessary.

In the meantime, Pacific Power, which has nearly 43,000 customers in Douglas County, recommends a number of ways to reduce energy consumption in homes and businesses. For more information: (888) 221-7070 or www.pacificpower.net.

- Switch energy usage to off-peak hours (from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) whenever possible.

- Set the thermostat on central air conditioning to 78 degrees or higher, health permitting.

- When away from home for several hours, set the thermostat on the air conditioner to 85 degrees. It takes less electricity to maintain that temperature.

- Trim foliage around air conditioners and make sure air can circulate freely.

- Close drapes, particularly those on west and south windows, to shut out sunlight.

- Limit use of appliances that generate heat to after 7 p.m. or in the morning, including dishwashers, ovens, irons and dryers.

- Unplug any second refrigerators and move items to the primary refrigerator.

- Turn off lights, computers, televisions and appliances when not using them.

- Open windows in the cool of the evening and again in the early morning to let in cool air.

- Use the intake setting on window fans to help bring in even more cool air.

- Keep air moving inside a home with ceiling, window, attic and portable fans.

Okay... and let me give the energy companies a few suggestions.

Build more power plants.
Build more power plants.
Build more power plants.
Build more power plants.
Build more power plants.

And last of all, quit whining when the public turns on the friggen light switch. What the hell do you think you're in business for?

It's over 110 degrees and they tell folks not to run their electrical appliances during the afternoon. I think I'm beginning to see what the problem is. The lights are on, but nobody's home at DWP.

And for heaven's sake, quit spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on commericials telling folks not to use electricity. Spend the money creating more energy. Duh...

Yeah right, when it's 85+ degs inside my house, you better believe I'll be running every ceiling fan AND the portable air conditioner just to survive.....I run them all day just to keep it under 90 degs.

I say Free Air Conditioning for all the 'working families', children and senior citizens!!!

Shouldn't the focus be on how to provide more/sufficient power to meet the demand of the customers? It so bassackwards to tell people less, less, less when the temperatures say more, more, more....

Turn the freaking lights off in Hollyweird and the CA Legislature. Hollywood basically produces useless junk (at least 80%) and I don't think that the Dem controlled legislature does a whole lot of good either.

Like you said, a nuke plant or 2 in non-fault areas would help considerably too.

Well, the greenies are enjoying their obstructions to electrical progress, right?

They have been producing less junk due to runaway production...

There have been reported something between 40 and 80 deaths due to the heat. I wonder how many of the general public realize why these deaths occurred? Greenies stopping all new power plants perhaps?

Yeah, how about nuclear?
Reduces dependence on foreign oil, lowers balance of payments, eliminates Co2, etc., etc.

As I understand it there are better nuclear power plan designs these days that work at much lower temperatures and are thereby more safe.

I don't know all that much about them, but I believe it involves pebbles instead of rods.

Perhaps someone who knows more about it can chime in.

I'm all for it, old design or new design.

Of course the warm fuzzy greenies would never allow themselves to think that they are directly to be indirectly responsible in all senses that 'environmental concerns' to thwart construction of new power plants are the exact reason for a lot of the power grid problems.

Overload the grid, and, well it kinda simulates a short. Ya get a huge current draw, then an immediate voltage drop, then the equipment on line says: "Ahhhh Heeecccckkk....I give up!"

Anything that interferes with the Utopian view of the Liberal Lefties causes an immediate mental quick disconnect from reality, fact, and responsibility. Total blackout follows with the blame always on someone else.
