What if Lebanon's army joins Hizbullah?
The Jerusalem Post ^ | July 30, 2006 | ALAN M. DERSHOWITZ

Posted on 07/30/2006 5:52:00 PM PDT by tessalu

As Israeli ground forces cross over into Lebanon in an effort to destroy Hizbullah's capacity to fire rockets and missiles at Israeli civilians, the president of Lebanon Emile Lahoud is taking sides and flexing his nation's muscle for the first time.

He told a German magazine that he "respects Hizbullah" and its terrorist leader Hassan Nasrallah, and he has threatened to turn the Lebanese army against Israel. This would cause a self-inflicted, and perhaps lethal, wound on Lebanon.

Militias associated with several Lebanese political parties -including the party of the speaker of the parliament and of the Lebanese Communist Party - have already joined Hizbullah in attacking Israel.

Up until now, the Lebanese government has claimed that it has no real army, not even one capable of controlling the Hizbullah terrorists who have "occupied" southern Lebanon. It has claimed an inability to enforce UN resolution 1559 which, adopted by the Security Council in 2004, "calls for the disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias," meaning Hizbullah. And it has disclaimed any responsibility for Hizbullah atrocities against Israeli civilians and kidnapped soldiers.

NOW, ALL of a sudden, its tune has changed.

What if Lebanon's army joins Hizbullah?

Then they will have chosen poorly.

What if Lebanon's army joins Hizbullah?

Then they will have made a serious mistake.

Yes, and they can all die too! I'm a little leary about Dershowitz joining the pro-Israel crowd.

It's too bad, they could choose to side with Israel
and crush Hezb'ullah between them and perhaps have a
chance at a free nation.

Then you destroy the Lebanese Army. And if Syria join, you destroy Syria. Not airstrikes, not buffer zones, invasion.

And when you're done with the governments, you don't bother cleaning up the afteraffects. You let the Arabs deal with the mess.

Desrshowitz has been downright hawkish on the WOT. His stance on torture of terrorists was basically that you do what you have to do and you keep your mouth shut about it.

What's this about joining the "pro-Israel crowd"? He's always been pro-Israel.

He practically could have written the administration guidelines for how to handle captured terrorists.

Some of the Lebanese army are already Hezbollah supporters. So I don't think the army joining with Hezbollah would change things much militarily, but it could be curtains for the current democratic government.

"His stance on torture of terrorists was basically that you do what you have to do and you keep your mouth shut about it."

Which is the traditional, conservative, and reasonable approach to the problem.

You have apparently confused Alan Dershowitz with someone else. Noam Chomsky, perhaps? FYI:

Dershowitz Speech

In 1983, the Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith presented him with the William O. Douglas First Amendment Award for his "compassionate eloquent leadership and persistent advocacy in the struggle for civil and human rights." In presenting the award, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel said: "If there had been a few people like Alan Dershowitz during the 1930s and 1940s, the history of European Jewry might have been different."

They already fired on Israeli helicopters that landed in the Bekaa. If the Lebanese army chooses to enlist as a hostile combatant on the side of Hezbollah, it will share its fate.
