The Shadow of Seattle

It has elsewhere been noted that while pundits across America agonize over the anti-Semitic babble of actor Mel Gibson, the commentocracy have had little to say about the murderous July 28 attack on a Jewish community facility in Seattle.

In that despicable incident, 30-year old Naveed Afzal Haq kidnapped a 13-year old and used her as a cover to penetrate the premises. He then sprayed the building with gunfire, leaving Pamela Waechter, 58, dead, and five more people injured. Waechter had followed a remarkable path, having been raised in the Lutheran church and then converting to Judaism.

Reporting in the mainstream media (MSM) has notably underplayed this terrible incident, which should be taken as a wake-up call for Americans, especially American Muslims.

Naveed Haq is of Pakistani origin, which points to an unfortunate but undeniable reality: the Pakistani-American Sunni Muslim community is dominated by radical Islamist ideology. Pakistani clerics in Sunni mosques are well-known for their extreme teaching. In the Seattle area alone, a Sunni mosque has been the scene of sectarian conflict with Iraqi Shia Muslims – an importation of terrorist rhetoric from tormented Iraq.

Why can't we shut these mosques DOWN?!

Yep, the MSM, and jewish people, are all agog at Mel's drunken ramblings but little has been said about someone who actually kills jews and proclaims himself a muslim and an Israeli hater while doing it. I guess that isn't being anti-semitic. Not that Mel was a great guy for doing his little rant, but it pales in comparison with this killer of jews.

That'll happen only if/when the U.S. goes through considerably more pain.

Isn't it funny.....people will condemn Gibson for his anti semitic rant when he's drunk and for his family background (his father with his anti-semitic views)....but, no one talks about this guy raised in a rabidly anti-semitic (if not anti-social) environment, who is NOT drunk, and KILLS someone, and attempts to kill others.....ON PURPOSE.

The (over)-reaction is obviously due to Gibson's celebrity. If some Joe Schmoe off the street got drunk and ranted similiarly no one would give a damn.

Well said. Israel is in a struggle for its very existence, on the front lines of battle against Islamic Jihad, its citizens daily facing terror weapons, and the MSM is obsessed with Mel Gibson's rant. The danger was not what Gibson said, but what he did - driving while drunk.

You got that right, but that part was lost in the uproar over the rant. I really get irritated at the MSM and FBI trying to pretend the guy in Seatlle isn't a muslim terrorist, even though he proclaimed himself to be one while killing jews. God save us from the mentally blind.

Boy that's the truth, and I fear that it is coming. Our society makes it too easy for it not to happen.

The coverage this is getting is partly because of Gibson's celebrity, (count on this always being part of his biography) but also because it is much easier to bloviate, pontificate, hand-wring, and grandstand about Gibson's comparatively harmless drunken loutishness than it is to look true evil straight in the eye and try to figure out what to do about it. Oddly enough, the ostrich that has eyes wide open to see all the sordid details of Gibson's offense promptly sticks its head deep in the sand when the murder in Seattle occured.

I don't normally watch network TV news. I listen to news radio on a lot, although I might not have been playing very close attention last Friday and the days afterward. Do you know how I found out about the Seattle murder? Right here on FR. Do you know where I have seen any continued mention of it? Same place. But the Gibson story -- well I guess that will be with us until the next juicy celebrity outrage comes along, and the situation in Seattle -- well, will anyone outside of Seattle be talking about it tomorrow?

The woman murdered by the terrorist was an acquaintance of my wife, who also worked at the Federation for 13 years.

Terrorism is close to home, folks. If my wife was still working there, she'd have been shot. The guy walked right down her hall.

Same here. I probably saw far more television coverage of the shooting/murder than most, living in W. Washington and watching the local (Seattle) coverage. But I did take note of the almost complete lack of coverage on CNN, FNC, and the other national networks. Reminded me a bit of the incident a few years back at LAX, where a Muslim (with connections to some dubious groups) opened fire in the El Al terminal in that it got far less coverage than one would expect.

I live a couple hours from Seattle and the story has completely fallen off the radar here too. I am disappointed in people like Hannity and Rush for not sharing it more.

The whole Gibson story is about what he said, not the fact that he endangered countless people by his actions. What I have read from his remarks, it doesn't sound any worse than what you would read on DU, certainly much more tame than what I read in the Koran.

I just don't get it. The media are either consciously working for the other side, or they are so completely gutless and shallow that they don't know how to handle serious issues.

It reminds me of another story that got buried quickly -- the kid who blew himself up outside the Oklahoma Univ. stadium. The only continued, in-depth discussion I found was on FR. My father, who religiously watches the news--local at noon, 5, 6 and 10, and the network at 5:30, and other times during the day as the spirit moves him, hadn't heard of it until I mentioned it to him.

I'm going to try to guess about the motives of the authorities for not playing up the obvious string of murders, killings, and mayhem by people who just happen to be Islamic, hate Americans or Jews, and go on a personal jihad.

Here's my guess: there are about a billion Moslems in the world. The jidhadists among them love to portray themselves as victims of the Jews and the Americans. By downplaying their own efforts to instigate an American response, we deprive the enemy of a powerful tool to gather together Moslems into a war of "us" against "them." Perhaps the authorities believe that they can split the Moslem community this way. Instead, we go on a war against "terror" and Bush calls Islam a "religion of peace." It's a form of psychops.

That's my guess. My guess is also that if we decided to throw out every Moslem and bulldoze the mosques in the United States, we'd radicalize every Moslem from Jakarta to Dakar. Deprive the enemy of a target and he can't aim very well. Like I said, just a guess.

It is very disappointing that the media has chosen to ignore this story. I am disappointed particularly in Fox News. This can happen anywhere and unfortunately probably will. If anything these type of people will be emboldened by this lack of attention.

The Seattle papers are playing up the supposed bi-polar illness of this individual and his difficulty in being employed. You might as well hang a sign at the border welcoming all terrorists.

I can't believe I heard Patty Murray on the radio this morning blaming Homeland Security for this attack. Darn good thing I wasn't behind the wheel at the time.
