Ark. governor: Day will come when cigarettes no longer sold
Associated Press (excerpt) ^ | August 2, 2006

Excerpt -

LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Huckabee, who successfully pushed for a statewide workplace smoking ban earlier this year, predicted Wednesday that cigarettes eventually won't be sold because of their health risks.

"I think the day will come when we probably won't" sell cigarettes, Huckabee said on his monthly call-in radio show. "If cigarettes were introduced to the marketplace today, they wouldn't be sold. They'd never make it because what we didn't know when they were first created, sold and marketed is just how deadly harmful they were."

Huckabee was responding to a caller's question of why cigarettes are allowed to be sold if they are so harmful. The governor fielded complaints from at least two callers about the state smoking ban, which went into effect July 21.

Heck, I have old Abbott and & Costellos with cigarette ads stating the AMA recommend smoking because it is good for you.

There! I went ahead and fixed it for the year 2100.

It won't take that long. It has already begun. Twenty years ago you could smoke at the grocery store and look where we are today.

well when your product kills your customer you are bound to go out of business at some point.

You're right.

One of these days, there will be no more grocery stores. We'll all have to grow, harvest, and store our own food.

What's next,
A. hamburgers?
B. Low cut bathing suits?
C. Knives?
D. Automobiles?

Which of the answers does not fit in the category above?

If you want to make up a game, you must make the answers more difficult.

a smoker who's got his hand to his/her mouth, then back to the window, or driving with their knee because they're trying to light the darned thing

How in the he!! does a hand from a mouth to the window impair driving???

Put the dam_ lighters back in vehicles and voila! no more knee driving.

Just shows how much of a grip tobacco has on a person when they cannot go for a meal without smoking....

Smoking is part of the meal.

It has been thus in civilized societies for centuries.

We have become uncivil and uncivilized as a result of these smoking bans.

People used to gather in restaurants to eat, drink, smoke, and converse.

Now they go to satisfy their calorie requirements.

Sad.

humans will eventually give up a pointless, death-dealing, expensive practice.

I am afraid you are correct, and that practice is freedom and life itself.

The exact same thing has been said about gasoline.
And aspirin.

And saccharin. Well, for 20 years until they decided there was no bad health effects after all.

There's nothing worse than a reformed smoker or a former lard ass out to save the world from what ails it.

This sort of socially conservative activism is becoming a drag.

::cough::

"I am afraid you are correct, and that practice is freedom and life itself."

You're free to smoke but being enslaved to an addictive bunch of weeds is not my definition of freedom. Nor is the use of a poison a part of my definition of life itself.

There is freedom in personal responsibility and the strength to manage one's life free of addiction. The first few are a choice but after that there is addictive compulsion.

But, as I said, the choice is yours.
