U.N. takes a hard line against Iran
Japan Times ^ | August 4 2006

The United Nations Security Council this week passed a resolution that gives Iran a stark choice: suspend its uranium-enrichment activities or face possible economic sanctions.

There has been mounting alarm over Iran's nuclear activities. Tehran insists that it is merely exercising its right as a member of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) to develop a peaceful nuclear-energy program. That means carrying out all facets of the nuclear-fuel cycle -- including uranium enrichment and nuclear-fuel reprocessing, which can also be used to develop a nuclear bomb.

Arguing that it enjoys the right to peaceful nuclear technology, Tehran has suspended talks with the IAEA over the terms of inspections to determine the real state of its nuclear program. Britain, France and Germany have taken the lead in negotiating a deal; those countries, along with the United States put forward in June a package of proposals to settle the issue. Iran has said it will respond to the offer by Aug. 22.

U.N. takes a hard line against Iran

Certainly not when it comes to Iran's (financial/military) support for the Hezbollah terrorists. ....and the reason is clear: The UN enthusiastically supports Hezbollah as well.

Ok, let's start counting. This will be resolution number one. And in about ten years we will be up to number 12 or 14 or so -- deja vu Iraq and Saddam. Unless of course, Iran gets leveled in a war, which would of course, be the best solution to preventing them from getting a bomb, unless China or NK sells them one.

Yes, the U.N. is a force to be reckoned with, alright. If you do not comply, they will steal your money and starve your people....and say they did not do it. Just ask the Iraqis about what happened to their oil for food scenario!!

The sooner the U.N. is GONE from USA soil, the better. Our government is losing credibility (with US citizens) at an alarming rate, and the U.N. presence does not help ---

Oh yea.. I bet the Iranians are just shaking in their boots.

Lets all face it, the UN is the "Barney Fife" of international order keeping.

Take Saddam
Take Hezbollah
Take Hamas

They make big threats, and never do anything to enforce them.

If the UN is going to continue as a world body, they had damn well better do something to stop the Iranians.

And as feeble as the UN's hardline is, the US had to drag them kicking and screaming to this point. Otherwise they'd be offering Iran nuclear weapons and free satellite TV in exchange for promising not to invade europe.

IIRC, didn't "Aberjabber" and the Iranians have some sort of "anniversary" on Aug 22?? I thought the UN gave them until Sept 1st or so to reply, so WHY the "Aug 22" reply??

Are they gonna try to get that 12th "Koranimal" out of a well or something by going "all-in" on Aug 22??
