PARIS, Aug 11, 2006 (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac welcomed the adoption Friday by the UN Security Council of a resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
"I hail the unanimous adoption tonight by the UN Security Council of a resolution calling for a complete cessation of hostilities in Lebanon," he said in a statement released by his office.
Resolution 1701, drawn up by France and the United States, also calls for expanding the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to 15,000 troops.
"In line with its responsibilities, France will take part in the implementation of this resolution, particularly concerning the new UNIFIL force," said Chirac.
A decision on what France will contribute will be taken after it becomes clear what resources the force will get and how many other countries are willing to participate, he added.
France was the original author of the resolution, which was the object of more than a week of tough negotiations.
"Since the start of the crisis France has believed that a military solution was not possible and undertook every effort to bring about an immediate end to the violence," said the French president.

If Olmert needs to step down, doesn't Bush as well? Its a United States-France negotiated plan that the UN Security Council accepted unanimously.

French cheese stinks, this agreement stinks, and, quite frankly the whole of France stinks.
Having said that, the world will rue the day that this UN resolution was passed.
This, in the face of the plot to kill thousands on ten aircraft? The bombings in Mumbai India? London? New York? Bali? The Marine barracks in Lebanon?
I've not the words.
If I utter another word, I'll get banned, and I like it here.
People are forgetting, myself included sometimes, that Lebanon is a nation and has a say in this too. Bush and Olmert are not the only players. Bush can't push Lebanon around like some here expect.
