So you are going back 20+ years? Geez, we are speaking of events this last month not Reagan's biggest mistake.

What next? Complaints about not mentioning the Barbary Pirates?

I'll go read that article; it sounds interesting.

Yes, we can only hope that someone/s will continue and finish what President Bush started. It sure won't be a damned Dem, though; that we know.

You belong on the DU. You are beyond dialog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why? Because I don't think Bush walks on water? In your mind, is it POSSIBLE for Bush to screw up?

I think Bush screws up our national security at our borders and his love of social program spending is fairly disgusting.
He's done good in prosecuting the war under these modern conditions IMO.
If we had the 24 hour cable news watching in WW2 we might all be speaking either Japanese or German today.

Regarding Lebanon, Hezbollah and the Jews....
Again, based on the world we are in and the more liberal leadership that Israel has at this time, I think this ceasefire was just a time-out in what will be a continuation of the war.

Regarding ANY action we take in the Middle East or our allies like Brittan, Australia or Israel takes...
It will all fail unless we stop this military targets only war. War is nation to nation, not nation to military target.

Lebanon cuddled with Hezbollah, and despite there being lots of Christians there, there has to be between Israel and Lebanon a war between nations where there is more collateral damage that isn't only military targeted.
If the country doesn't respect the power of Israel, and they handcuff themselves with limited targets, then how do they win?

Likewise we in our battles need to use overwhelming force IMO and if Iran and Syria is seriously known to be involved, we better get to kicking their @sses now rather than allow their oil money to keep financing the death of good soldiers and innocent civilians.

Radical Islam only respects POWER.
If it is shown Jihad fails and only gets them and all they care about destroyed, then maybe they will stop this cr@p, or die.

Doesn't mean a hill of beans.

Israel has already proven that Olmert doesn't have the stones to get the job done, and done right. They know now who was supplying the weapons to Hezbollah and now they know that only an overwhelming response to any more attacks is the only way to wipe these maniacs out.

Thing is, if they do that then Syria and Iran get in the act, Iran fires its nukes, Israel takes out both Syria and Iran and WWIII starts.

Did I leave anything of importance out?

Good commentary, well thought out. Yes, I too think that the cycles of politics are not working to our advantage at the moment. I surely hope you are right about the country realizing their error in four years, the eight year pattern would indeed be dangerous.

One thing to warm to soul a little: If a Democrat did pull the trigger, the defections from their base would make the Republican's immigration problem seem like child's play!

This was a good discussion with you, I appreciate a thoughtful commentator

I stand corrected and deeply humbled by confusing the Israeli flag with the toilet paper flag of the United Nations.

Radical Islam only respects POWER.

Exactly. The only things they respond to are force, fear and intimidation. We have to be MORE vicious, MORE brutal and MORE ferocious than they are.

Again, based on the world we are in and the more liberal leadership that Israel has at this time, I think this ceasefire was just a time-out in what will be a continuation of the war.

That is what some people are saying but the problem is that it gives Hezbollah time to regroup. Israel did not even get their soldiers back.

I didn't realize that my knee had jerked...who knew? I read all I can every day to be better aware of the situation in the Middle East and think I have a clue now and then. The Israeli media was against a cease fire and so were many of their top military leaders. The cease fire came about due to US pressure, according to most Israeli sources I read. It all makes little difference as the Hezbollahs will never disarm and the UN will be powerless to make them do it. How did you become such an "expert" on matters in Israel?

Well that explains it... The Un (spit) flag will never disgrace any flag pole I'm in charge of.

Carry on.

If Israel nukes Syria & Iran, then the price of oil can come down and Russia will have a chance to get their oil sold without as many problems.

With the Muslims that survived being easy to spot at night (because they will glow in the dark), the Jihad will wind down nad hte survivors can begin to join the modern world.

Camels and goats throughout the Muslim world will live less fearful lives, as well.

Though I have been studying this situation for 30+ yrs. one need not be an expert to realize that the Israeli cabinet voted 24-0 for this ceasefire. Israel's media is likely of no more value than ours.

One factor that has not been considered is the negative impact on the American effort in Iraq produced by the Israeli response. Israel understands that these are two fronts in the same war.

My position is still carpet bomb up to the Latani River, sow salt, and make it a big DMZ.....Forgot the minefield. then let the Hezbo's rot in Lebannon. Lebannon is a lot cause. IMHO

"Iran wants the world fixated on Lebannon, instead of its nuclear program."

Don't forget Iraq. This may be a diversion to get the focus off Iran's activities in Iraq. Iran is going for the kill in Iraq, smuggling in rockets and weapons into Iraq to be used by factions in the civil war that Iran has instigated.

You are spot on! One reason for the why the Bush Administration may have pushed so hard for the diplomatic route may have been the reason you gave if the IDF used overwhelming force to decimate Iran's Hezbollah: "Syria and Iran get in the act." The Bush Administration is trying to work on those dynamics that encourage Iran and Syria to actively step in. If Iran saw that Israel was succeeding in taking out the Hezbollah, they would have taken a more dangerous route. WMDs may have been that route. We may be planning for such an event.

Whether it is simply to defuse the situation, stall the game or some other big picture thing, it is certain that much is being kept secret. In the game of stategery, war is deception. We can only speculate.

There is a multidimensional complexity to how we deal with Iran. It is such a complex enterprise, it is taking some time to develop the game plan. I am hoping that we are nearing the final stages of the planning phase so the whistle is blown to "wipe these maniacs out."

"Lets hope the terrorist never get accurate guidance for their rockets."

Your point needs emphasizing. I am still worried that WMDs may be used to compensate for the inaccuracy.
