Iran's state television today said the military would launch a series of large-scale exercises on August 19.
State television quoted army deputy commander General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani as saying that the upcoming maneuvers "aim at introducing Iran's new defensive doctrine."
Ashtiani reportedly said the exercises would involve both ground and air forces and would go on "for an unspecified period of time."
Addressing reporters at a news briefing on August 16, Ashtiani said the war games would take place in West and East Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Baluchestan va Sistan, and Khorasan provinces.
Most of those peripheral provinces also have large ethnic minority groups.
Iran's Interior Ministry this week said security patrols along the country's borders would be reinforced in a bid to counter the activity of drugs smugglers.

MMM.. Just looked a map. A lot of those places mentioned border near Iraq. Perhaps this is a test of border defences.

Those "deployed" troops would have to get all the way across Syria.
If Iran wants to screw with Israel anytime in the near future it would have to be via the air. No way they can do it on the ground.
Nah. They'd have to cross American assets in Iraq and elsewhere to do that.
Short of launching nuclear missiles at Israel, there's not much they can really do. Now, that could happen, but I'm thinking they wouldn't.
I can see them having had something planned for 8/22, also involving the (foiled) plane bombing plot. And I'm pretty sure Israel's attack into Lebanon spoiled Iran's plan to have the Hezzies cause problems at the same time.
So I suspect Iran's gonna end up with a big fizzle, instead of the bang they wanted.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least. I expect to wake up any morning now, flip on the news, and find the world has taken a huge dive into chaos.
Israel.
Using maneuvers as a cover for launching an attack has been a time honored gambit. If they are massing forces I think we would have satellite intel if nothing more, to reveal it.
Could this be behind the recent cautious even strange behavior by Israel and the US re: Lebanon?
Let's hope Israel has it's Arrows and Patriots primed and ready. We really need to be massing troops to invade Iran before it is mass producing nukes. Korea was Clinton's madness, but this is utter insanity.
