CA: UC Berkeley chancellor creates new post aimed at diversity

University of California, Berkeley, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau is creating a top-level post to focus on keeping the campus fair and welcoming.

Birgeneau said he wants to make sure there is equal opportunity for students, faculty and staff regardless of religion, sexual orientation, race, gender or whether someone has a disability or not.

"I very strongly believe that every single person (should) feel that this is a place where they belong, where they are respected for their individuality, for what they represent and their background," Birgeneau said Wednesday in announcing the new position at a back-to-school briefing.

A national search is under way to fill the job of vice chancellor for equity and inclusion. Salary has not been determined, but the range is between $182,000 and $282,000, a campus spokeswoman said.

Birgeneau said the new vice chancellor will work with human resources, services for the disabled, multicultural centers and other units to make sure students feel at ease and faculty and staff get equal opportunities to advance.

In meetings about the climate on campus, Birgeneau said he didn't discover systematic discrimination but found some dissatisfaction.

"It became clear to me we were not going to make Berkeley the kind of place it needs to be (by) approaching the challenge piecemeal," he said.

University of California, Berkeley, Chancellor Robert Birgeneau

Why is the chancellor a white male? He should be fired and replaced with a gay, trangendered, black/hispanic/asian mix and be a physically handicapped person.

" the job of vice chancellor for equity and inclusion."

It was reported that the vice chancellor's first task will be to recruit one token Christian to be a student at UC Berkeley.

UC Berkeley administrators feel that it is important to have at least one Christian student on their campus in light of the current leadership in Washington which controls federal dollars that flow to the university.

You mean they are going to welcome Christians and political conservatives to Berkeley? Nah.

My girl is a PhD student there (in Real Science, hold on to your attack dogs) so I visit there alot. I can confidently say that this is the most redundant job I've ever heard of. UC Berkeley in no way has any "diversity" problems (using the Chancellors definition of course). If I was a California tax payer I would be none to happy about this.

Mean while students there are angry that the University is "wasting" money renovating their football stadium. Did I mention that the San Andreas fault runs through the 50 yard line and the stadium is slowly cracking in half?

Berkeley is a weird place.

"True diversity includes everyone, which is why this proposal is dead in the water at Berkeley."

Nope. They get to define what they mean by a truly diverse student population. If that means excluding some in order to achieve their version of diversity, then so be it.

How about "equal opportunity" for my twin matching revolvers, Mr. Birgeneau Worm, et al?

The liberal definition of diversity and inclusion means no conservatives, Republicans or traditional Christian believers welcomed...

Diversity of appearance, not philosophy.

Conservatives can sit at the back of the classrooms.

Bezerkely is weird....but one of the premier universities ranked #1 in public universitys and more top ten grad programs then any other.....your girl's Ph.D there means a hell of alot.....it is the town that is the most weird...and it is the Hayward fault that runs thru it...not the San Andreas fault.....

"I very strongly believe that every single person (should) feel that this is a place where they belong, where they are respected for their individuality, for what they represent and their background," Birgeneau said ...

And all it takes to create this utopian state is the hiring of another bureaucrat paid with taxpayer dollars.

You don't suppose Birgeneau is a liberal do ya?

Believe me I am well aware of how how good her graduate program is (4th in the country). It is also true that it is town that's the weirdest, but that certainly doesn't mean the campus isn't weird too. This is largely, of course, because people from the town wander into the campus.
