Here is a light-hearted Saturday story of chivalry with a dash of comedy.
Japanese TV reported this story today. Here is the video clip.
It seems a young Japanese lady, minding her own business, became the target of a sexual harasser (so-called "chikan") at an underground stairway in a Tokyo subway station.
Just as the women was being accosted by the perp, it happened that too rather beefy, young, sumo wrestlers were passing by. Great timing.
Needless to say, they made 'chanko nabe' of that little pervert in no time at all, grabbing a hold of him, getting him in a headlock, and rushing him off to the Tokyo police where he was duly arrested.

and above per link, 300K Windows Media Player, 1 minute.
This shows the station where the attack happend, the victim, a 26-year old Tokyo woman who was accosted and molested explaining the incident, a still photo of the perp doing the perp walk, and finally the funny, cute interview witht two young, somewhat shy Japanese wrestler heroes in front of their sumo training 'stable', showing off for the cameras how they brought the fellow down and to eventually to Japanese justice. A cute, funny, heartwarming story.
There are still MEN, rough and gentlemenly at the same time, in this world, ready for "Let's Roll!" ("Rettsu Rouru!") or perhaps "Yarozei!", to help a nice gentle lady in distress!

Here is something for you and any others on the "Japan Ping List", which I unfortunately, and lazily, do not have handy! :-)

Any linguists out there who care to explain to me why the Japanese language sounds so lyrical (as opposed to, say, Chinese), even when spoken by a sumo wrestler?

You cannot get any more lyrical THAN Chinese, IMHO! :-)

Just for training and bouts, and tournaments. They may well have been in cutoffs and jeans. Outside of that, they wear yukata, and if at a wedding ceremony, or something official, at the Imperial Palace, etc, the whole nine yards of elaborate traditional male wear. Remember it is summer there just like here in the USA.

It's just an opinion I've had for a while. It's entirely possible that my first extensive exposure to Chinese was of a dialect that makes me think this way.

Going into the station, they would not have been dressed just in loin clothes. They may in fact have looked like THIS:

My guess is that they would have been attired something like that in post number 9 here.

Moral of the story .... before molesting always first check for presence of cameras and sumo wrestlers.

Sweet Justice. Samurai honor still exists.
I think the translation goes roughly something like this "Yo, we kicked that punk mofo's A$$!"

I am an an internet cafe near a US airport right now :-) no time for translation. Essentially the guys just said they used moves that they had learned in training, so they guess the training came in handy!!
