Angelides Phony Tax Cut Plan (Jonathan Coupal on the REAL Phil Angelides' Alert)
Orange County Register ^ | 08/22/06 | Jonathan Coupal

This is an unfortunate trend with Angelides. He has proposed a number of spending plans along the campaign trail but never answered the question, "How will you pay for it?" He wants to dramatically increase school funding, supports state-run single-payer health care, says he will close the budget deficit and advocates immediate universal health care for California children, among other spending.

His only on-the-record plan to pay for these things: raising taxes on the "wealthy" and closing "corporate tax loopholes." He has failed to detail these "loopholes" and how much more money he would bring in from them. And he claims all of his spending will only require $5 billion in higher taxes, which is akin to trying to buy a Ferrari at the 99 Cents Only Store.

When it comes to Angelide's tax plans, taxpayers are forced to conclude that either he does not plan to follow through on his promises, or he plans a massive tax hike to pay for them all – a tax hike that will inflict great harm to California's middle class.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides has a lifetime record as a politician who believes California needs to spend more and YOU - the average Californian, aren't paying enough in taxes. Sure, he promises now a middle class tax cut which as it turns out, doesn't even buy a year's worth of gas. And given his spending promises and his not detailing any spending cuts, the money has come out of your other pocket, making his tax cut plan as phony as a $2 dollar bill. And Angelides still won't tell voters how he intends to pay for all his spending proposals on the campaign trail. Hang to your wallets if he's elected in November - to pay for everything he's promising folks, will end our recovery from the years of the Gray Davis' fiscal meltdown. California can't afford more spending and still higher taxes.

This is a socialist income redistribution plan; take from the "rich" and give it to the poor, what people will discover that they never knew they are the "evil rich" Angelides wants to tax more.

I sent this letter to the LA Times, but it probably won't be published:
"State Treasurer Phil Angelides says he remains committed to increasing taxes on "corporations" and the wealthy by $5 billion despite a pledge this week to cut taxes by $1.4 billion. Since "corporations" are simply investors - and these include the pensions of public workers - how does a tax increase on "corporations" help the earnings of middle-class pensioners, the group he's targeting for a tax break? And how does a tax increase on "corporations" (investors) help our state's budget if poor public pension performance must be subsidized by taxes? Very Confusing.
Why not just let the "corporations" (public pensioners and other middle-class investors) keep their own money?"

duh

And if you increase taxes on corporations, those costs are passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices and reduced buying power in their paychecks. How does that help the struggling middle class? Angelides needs to take a crash course in economics.

<<< making his tax cut plan as phony as a $2 dollar bill. >>>

Sir, excuse me, but a $2 bill is legal tender. Maybe you meant a $3 bill?

LOL! I happen to have $2 bills... the ones with Thomas Jefferson on the them. But one hardly ever sees them so its still an apt metaphor.

He talks of tax hikes in one breath, then in another he talks tax redistribution and reduction in taxes for Californians.
Sounds fishy to me.
