Allen Park Officer Hit In Crash Caused By Text-Messaging Driver

POSTED: 9:57 am EDT August 28, 2006

A suburban Detroit police officer was injured in an accident caused by a teenage motorist sending a text message on his cell phone.

Michigan State Police said a 17-year-old male driver hit the rear of an Allen Park police car, which was policing an earlier crash Sunday afternoon.

The crash caused the police car to spin around and hit the officer, who was thrown into the air on an Interstate 94 ramp.

The teenage driver, who told police he was text-messaging on his cell phone when he hit the police car, suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.

The officer, who was listed in stable condition, was being treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

I hope it's set to "vibrate" and tickles his colon when it rings...

I really don't understand the popularity of text messaging. It is just so much easier to talk than type.

We lost a family member in an MVA. Just another reason I don't act like an idiot behind the wheel.

There have been times that I have done it when I needed to get a message to someone but speaking was not appropriate at the time but never when I've been driving.

Take his phone away during his time out.

Keeps conversations pithy and silent.

I've been told it's a "kid thing" I wouldn't understand, but I'm with you on this one.

However, neither one appears to be easy when a motor vehicle is involved.

I don't like a lot of distraction when I drive.

I expect a lot of it occurs at school. During class. Also it may be cheaper than voice calls, and many of these kids have minute-limits that they readily surpass, given their tendency to yak with their friends incessantly.

Understand. Some guy on an Interstate was reading a newspaper and driving. I pulled up and leaned over like I was looking over his shoulder. Of course I was really looking ahead, but I made all the body language look like I was a snoop.

The guy got this "WTF?" look on his face and put it down.

Don't think he'll be doing that anymore.

So, is this going to spark enough national outrage to keep idiots off these attention stealers while behind the wheel of a potential WMD? Inquiring minds want to know!

If a future car crash doesn't kill this kid, the brain tumor from using his cell phone all the time will.

Instead of airbag warnings, I wish car manufacturers stickered their visors with copies of the Golden Rule.

He was treated and released from Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn.

The public would have been better served if that sentence read "he was treated and remanded into the custody of the Dearborn Police Department.

I saw a lady putting on makeup while she was driving. It shocked me so much I dropped my electric razor.
