Veterans Clash With Salt Lake City Mayor
Associated Press ^ | Aug 30, 2006 | ED WHITE

Posted on 08/30/2006 8:08:19 PM PDT by george76

The American Legion opened its national convention in Salt Lake City this week with high hopes the gathering would help "unite America" behind the war in Iraq.

Instead, the veterans have found themselves in a fight with the city's anti-war mayor.

Mayor Rocky Anderson, a Democrat in a city that is considered liberal by heavily Republican Utah's standards, has accused the Bush administration of lying about the rationale for war. He has called President Bush a "complete disaster."

And he organized a protest rally Wednesday a few blocks from the Salt Palace Convention Center, just hours before Bush's arrival here for an address to the American Legion.

The American Legion was so offended by Anderson that it refused to extend the customary invitation to the host city's mayor to deliver the welcoming address.

"Rocky ought to sit behind his desk and leave the rest of the world alone. I wouldn't dream of doing things like this," said Legionnaire Lynn Beckstead...

"If you don't like Bush, fine, but respect the office. This is a very conservative state, sweet and friendly. That's not sweet."

Anderson seems to savor the controversy, even inviting peace activist Cindy Sheehan to Salt Lake City for the protest. She dropped out, citing health reasons.

At least 12,000 veterans are at the convention.

Rumsfeld said the world faces "a new type of fascism" and likened critics of the Bush administration's war strategy to those who tried to appease the Nazis in the 1930s.

"Can we truly afford to believe that somehow, some way, vicious extremists can be appeased?" ...

This Rocky Anderson sounds more like an active, practicing member of AlQaida than he does some sort of appeaser.

The man is definitely a danger to the American people.

"Can we truly afford to believe that somehow, some way, vicious extremists can be appeased?"

Democrats seem to have no problem at all with that concept.

Jeff Hartley, executive director of the Utah Republican Party...thinks Anderson doesn't represent the majority of Utahns' opinions.

Sheehan's spokeswoman did not return several requests for comment by phone and e-mail Monday.

Anderson and his spokesman Patrick Thronson also did not return phone and e-mail inquiries.

I eventually joined the Legion, but told them I was REALLY UPSET, they hosted the communist traitor clintoon at one of their conventions. They placated me (a very little bit) by saying it was his Office, not him. At least the current leadership are considering the character of the "office holder"....

Were you able to watch E.D. Hill interview Anderson on Fox and Friends this morning? She took him to task for accusations he made about President Bush ordering the torture of captured individuals (he couldn't bring himself to call them the enemy). Anderson was sputtering and stuttering because E.D. called him on his comment. It was great.

We interviewed the mayor and he expressed his view that due to the importance of the Iraq war he felt it was his duty to protest the president and his policies.

That's fine. He's entitled to his view.

But then he decided to go off-topic and claimed the president favored torture.

I asked him to give even one example.

He could not and instead started shifting the topic and talking around it.

I asked him for one example again.

Man am I sick of having sooooo many idiots and deficient people of limp character in leadership positions across this nation.
Its not the cream but the scum that seems to rise to the top in positions of government lately. Despicable creeps or spineless gutless wonders in the government abound. Ahhhggggggggggggggg.....

Missed that. But alas "W" does not favor torture ~ at least not real torture ~

These leftwingnuts get something in their head and it just won't let go ~ it's like they have these little sectors where "It's a Small World" type mantras reside and they take over their brains.

Rocky represents SLC which is far more liberal than all of Utah. Even my liberal aunts can't stand his policies and behavior.

IMO, the Sheehan visit was a total ploy. She knew she would be in the hospital (as I understand it was scheduled). I have a feeling Rocky and Cindy played this card to bring more attention to his protest (I don't think turn out was better this year than last year which indicates Cindy didn't help). However, there were a lot more counter protesters and a Freedom Rally this year - the good guys gained!

I am vacation and I flew into Salt Lake City this afternoon. I'm leaving tomorrow to go to Yellowstone Park. We found out that Bush was speaking from the hotel receptionist. So we walked in the indicated direction. The protesters were in a nearby park. They were mostly very young, though there were some hippies from the 60's. Cars would drive by and some would honk in support. One kid spoke to me and I disagreed with him.

I find these people to be pretty obnoxious. But as these things go, this one seemed pretty mild. Still, I gave a prayer for President Bush's well being.

Forgot to mention - President Bush just came into town and was greeted by a huge rally of thousands (according the the MSM). Rocky et al just got their collective butts kicked (the MSM will, of course, spin this). The confrontation w/ ED Hill helps too. Sucks to be you, Rocky and sad-sack libs!

You are quite right that he doesn't represent the majority of Utahns' opinions. SLC proper is the liberal bastion of our state (doesn't represent the majority of the SLC/Wasatch front communities), though we could probably include Park City (full of liberal implants from the West), Tooele (has always been left of center) and Moab (full of hippies - sorry Moab, grew up there but things have swung too far to the left for me!)

Thanks for that ping, George... I'll ping my FoxFan group to your post. Kudos to E.D. Hill!

I honestly had no idea Utah had any real liberal communities at all. I "assumed" Salt Lake City was fairly conservative. I learn something new on FR every day... that's why I'm here. ;-)
