email from Planned Parenthood of VA (BARF alert)

Posted on 08/31/2006 11:28:51 AM PDT by Gopher Broke

Thank you for your hard work on EC!

Dear xxxxx,

Great news! After years of delays, the FDA has finally approved Emergency Contraception (EC) for over-the-counter use for women 18 and older after years of delays! Your efforts have been critical in this fight to ensure better awareness of and access to EC: you have signed postcards, emailed your legislators, emailed the FDA, and taken many other EC-related actions. THANK YOU!

However, the fight isn't over yet!! The Family Foundation, Virginia's largest anti-choice group, has publicly announced its plans to 'craft a legislative remedy' to the FDA's decision to expand access to EC. What does this mean?! During the 2007 General Assembly session, we expect to see legislation that will further restrict access for teens and obstruct pharmacy access by allowing pharmacists to refuse! Take a look at some of the restrictive bills we saw last year (HB 868 and HB 173).

Please take action now by contacting your elected representatives: Let them know that expanded access to Emergency Contraception is critical to women's health and is good public policy!

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s): Your Delegate (if you live in Virginia) Your State Senator (if you live in Virginia)

Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Access to Emergency Contraception is critical to women's health

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

The FDA's recent decision to allow Emergency Contraception to be sold over-the-counter is a huge victory for women's health! Studies have shown that timely access to Emergency Contraception will drastically reduce unintended pregnancies and the need for abortion across the country.

However, EC doesn't work unless women know about it and can get it when they need it. Restrictions such as parental notification and refusal clauses for pharmacists do not protect women-they harm! During the 2007 General Assembly session, please act to ensure that the women of Virginia have the best possible access to health care.

Sincerely,

xxxxx xxxxxx

cc: Governor Timothy Kaine (if you live in Virginia)

That's debatable. I resent any group telling me what's good for women. It's like trying to think for me. Not good. Regardless of my personal revulsion at abortion, even if I didn't feel that way this is not how to win my support. #%&%&#!

I agree with you..........and parental notification has nothing to do with "women" it is about children.

More tidy little ways to sweep away at the country's morality, ebbing with each legal swipe. It's okay. No Rx needed. And you only have to tell your parents until you're a senior. As soon as you're 18, you can go all the way at prom and never have a care. [/rant]

I had always thought PP was there to prevent poor women from having more children than they can support, you know, 'don't breed 'em if you can't feed 'em? It seems I was wrong. Or could it be that their mission statement has changed over the years?
