Members of the Westboro Baptist Church found themselves outnumbered Sunday when they arrived to protest the funeral of U.S. Army Spc. Chris Sitton.
A phalanx of flags held by more than 100 Patriot Guard Riders and volunteers stood between them and the grounds of Montrose High School, as people chanted the Pledge of Allegiance and more than 20 police officers monitored the scene.
But Sara Phelps said she didn't care what others thought. "These people hold patriotic pep rallies for these dead soldiers and this is the time to tell them, 1. Don't worship the dead. And, 2., Don't worship the flag.
Those are two idols this country has clinged onto instead of just serving the Lord their God and obeying him. It makes me very happy that people hate us. I'm not out here to make friends."
Phelps, 25, is the granddaughter of Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps. She and approximately seven others, including two minor children, came to Montrose Sunday, picketing across the street from the school for 45 minutes prior to Sitton's rites.
The church group believes American war deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are divine punishment for what it perceives to be the U.S. government's pro-gay agenda. Church members travel to various military funerals with their message, which has prompted several states to legislate the distance picketers must stay from any funeral.
Colorado's version of the Rest in Peace Act imposed a 100-foot barrier between protesters and funeral services. It became law in May ...

YES!!!
Patriot Guard Bump!
those idiots do not have the spiritual sense the good Lord gave an ass. we thank God for the flag and for the people who served and gave the max, we worship neither.
Actually she is worse than a POS .
The Westboro Baptist Church is a church in name only. Fred Phelps has made a career of suing people and his kids are carrying on in the same tradition. They're hoping and praying someone will punch them so they can sue, and get an out-of-court settlement.
Give Charles Manson a pass and point him in her direction.
"We're here to show honor and respect to the Sitton family for the loss of their son defending our nation, giving us the freedom to ride free and show respect."
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
Phelps was Gore's boy in Kansas.
We don't worship either, but we respect both. Y'all might try it sometime.
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
She's succeeding in not making friends.

Precisely the correct approach. The Patriot Guard Riders do their best work when they simply stand as a bulwark between the Phelpsholes and the grieving family. A strong, silent show of support. Their mere presence speaks volumes, and nothing more needs be said.
(I should probably trademark Phelpsholes. Might be worth a few bucks.)
To assault, yell at, or even recognize them -- while it's tempting, because I'm sure the Riders get angry like you and I do -- would just bring them back to the center stage that they so crave. They are nonentities. They are irrelevant. They are a mite on a fly on a boil on the ass of the universe, and if they suddenly disappeared without a trace they might be missed for several seconds.
The best way to drive that point home is to mill around as if they weren't there at all. As if they were gnats or mosquitos or horseflies to be swatted when they land, but ignored as long as they don't get too close. Pests are pests, and while there are competing theories on how to kill them, you sure as hell don't want to feed them.
I recognize were they(the Patriot Guard Riders)are coming from and I do recognize they are on my side of the fence figuratively speaking and their main mission is to protect those in the family who have just lost a love one for servicing our country and to keep those in the family from seeing this garbage of the Phelps gang, so I have no beef with them.
But I am in disagreement with many on how we should deal with the Phelps gang and like minded individuals. I think locals and small group of individuals like us freepers should follow these nut cases around, if they get permits to do their thing, we should get a permit to do our thing across the street to oppose them. If they carry picket signs we should carry picket signs to counter them, if they have bull horns to rant their garbage then we should have bull horns to rant our opinion about their garbage.
These people really want attention they are begging for attention, I would hope someday a group of individuals would constantly give them attention but not the attention they are seeking. They are like kids carrying on, we need to be like parents that recognize this bad behaviour and says, "hey you want attention, your going to get some attention", and then the parent gives them a spanking.
Phelp's phony church is probably another tax dodge, too.
Most of the members are family.
I don't know, this rant does make sense, but in reality you are not just milling around etc, you are there to shield this garbage from others that have lost a love one. Maybe that is what needs to be done, Have individuals not just shield the families that have lost a love one but shield the community from seeing these pests. But the other side of me says you should do everything you can legally can to eliminate these pests. Maybe there is a flaw in the law.
This is a good start.
IMHO.

These inbreds are still in business? I thought the Phelps Phreaks would all be bankrupt and in jail on income tax evasion charges by now.
What is the latest on the " Phelps Phreaks ? "
