Congress's Fall Agenda Takes Shape
WSJ ^ | Sept. 5, 2006 | DAVID ROGERS

The most telltale clue to Congress's fall agenda may be an item that still may be added: middle-class tax cuts.

Down in polls and divided internally, Republicans want to block debate on domestic policy and shift attention to national-security issues that command more party unity. But census data last week highlighted the economic squeeze on many families, and House leaders are considering a pre-election bid to make permanent the $1,000 child tax credit and marriage penalty relief provisions enacted in 2001.

Like most of the Bush administration's tax breaks, these are due to expire at the end of 2010, when top rates for the wealthy and capital gains also will be in play. The strategy has been to wait until close to the deadline and then call up all of these issues at once, making it harder for Democrats to resist. But in the current political climate, the leadership could accelerate action on provisions for middle-income taxpayers if it means preserving Republican control of Congress in November.

This month's emphasis on national security dovetails with the Bush administration's campaign to portray Democrats as defeatist and indecisive on Iraq and the war against terror. "Providing for the safety and security of our constituents is our highest calling," wrote Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R., Tenn.) in a letter to Republican colleagues over the Labor Day weekend.

Taxcuts and homeland security -- that will certainly distinguish Republicans from Defeatocrats, who are weak on homeland security and always want to raise our taxes, not lower them.

It's high time the Republicans start to become proactive about their agenda, instead of letting the Dems lie and keep lying to the American people.

I think there is a good chance that Republicans will be able to hold onto both House and Senate.

A truly weak position, replacing bold leadership, integrity, and statesmanship with buying votes.

pathetic.

I am going to vote , and unlike the fair weather republicans, I am not going to let the Democrats get back in power, no matter how much we are disappointed with our leadership in the Republican party and our Senators and Congressmen.

Oh, really? How clever. They're just the smartest folks I ever saw - on a see-saw, that is. Yeah, that's sarcasm.

It's going to take more than this bone to deflect my outrage against the incumbents this year. I'm going for the throat in November.

I assume these are the cuts that were attached to the minimum wage increase/death tax bill last month.

Think about Pelosi third in line for the Presidency.....

Sickening

That being said, IF the GOP had enforced already passed IMMIGRATION LAWS during the last two years, none of this would be a problem now.

Screw that! I think binding up the Feds with their own little power struggles may just be the best thing true Patriots can contribute to their country. It's the only logical explanation for the "surplus" Clinton years. God knows with folks like Stevens running the show that spending has gone out the window.
