Everyone remembers the pictures, but I think more and more about the sounds. I always ask people what they heard that day in New York. We've all seen the film and videotape, but the sound equipment of television crews didn't always catch what people have described as the deep metallic roar.

Great column.
heartbreaking....
I'd tell my wife what she meant to me, I'd thank her for the children in my life and ask her to tell my kids that I loved them and hoped that they would grow up to make me proud.
That was a tear-jerker. Excellent piece.
It is this kind of love and compassion that separates us from hate breeding rhetoric of radical Islam. We will commemorate this 5th anniversary of 9-11 with prayer, remembrance of the heroism and sacrifice and somber reflection. If we were like those hate filled fanatics we would be rioting, burning mosques and chanting "death to Islam". That is the difference between Western civilization and Islamic facism.
That reduced me to tears. Does anyone else fell like me - that today five years later we haven't really obtained the type of revenge that we needed to? At least not a tangible revenge - not the equivalent of the signing of surrender papers aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay in 1945.
You aren't alone in your feelings.
This reminds us of what we should be doing daily. We never know if we might return home or not.Every night, the kids and wife get hugs and kisses.Same thing in the morning when I leave for work. If,for some reason,I don't get the chance to see them by days end, they'll have that one last hug and kiss to let them know I love them.
You forgot the hanky alert... :)
Excellent article.
Peggy Noonan's a class act. I've always enjoyed hearing her perspective on issues !!!
That is so great that you do that. And the ones at home should get up to greet you and hug and kiss back, everyday!! In the end it is what really matters.
Me and my Mamma have always ended every conversation (either on the phone or in person) with, "I love you." I can remember fighting bitterly with her one night on thephone and ending the fight with Ilove you -- because you rarely have the privilege of knowing your last moment on this mortal coil.
"...We will commemorate this 5th anniversary of 9-11 with prayer, remembrance of the heroism and sacrifice and somber reflection...."
Yes, it is great to commemorate the day and the dead in such a way. But I think there is also a time and place for screaming "death to Islam" right in the face of the terrorist bee hives (mosques) and showing a willingness to confront, fight, and punish the organization behind the terrorists.
I remember switching channels and we were watching ABC News. I was telling my wife how many people I knew that worked in the WTC and was hoping people could get out. Meanwhile Peter Jennings is rambling about some off-topic scenario. Suddenly the first tower fell. There was that awful rumble and crash. Then there was nothing but the other tower.
I yelled, "Oh my God there's a subway line beneath that building. I looked at my wife and she looked at me in total shock. But I guess Peter wasn't watching the monitor because he was still rambling until I guess he got word through his earpiece. Or maybe Peter heard me 1,100 miles away telling him to shut the hell up and look at the building collapse.
We stood there stunned. Peter never missed a beat and started talking again.
Then the second tower collapsed. And there was nothing but smoke.
I jumped into the car and went to find my parents. Told them the news (they were camping and didn't have TV and just woke up) and I'll never forget my father's reaction. He got up like he was going to rejoin the Marines if they'd take him and said, "It has to be terrorists, maybe Black September" (He was close). My parents started talking about Pearl Harbor and December 7th, etc.. They knew what the attack meant.
Ditto that... we have not dropped two nuclear bombs YET either... I'm still waiting...
Who exactly will sign the surrender papers after the two bombs are dropped?

Former Congressman BOB DORNAN on his then National Talk Radio Show immediately after the 1st plane hit Tower I on the morning of 9/11:
"And so, ALOHA RONNIE, what do you make of all this?"
"America has just witnessed its 1st Airstrike on American Soil, BOB."
"Airstrikes, you say Airstrikes RONNIE? Why do you say Airstrikes? Wait a minute, of course, you would say that. You were in combat during the Battle of the IA DRANG Valley in 1965 and there were Airstrikes used there also, weren't there? So this too IS combat, Ladies & Gentlemen. We have been attacked with an Airstrike and we are now at War" DORNAN quickly proclaimed.
Just a couple of minutes later...
...the 2nd Airstrike hit Tower II.
Just as RICK RESCORLA had predicted would happen all along:
