Remembering 9-11

We are about to embark on the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack on our homeland, an event which will no doubt be a landmark for all of us who lived through it as much as the death of President Kennedy and the explosion of the Nasa Space Shuttle. We will all remember where we were and what we saw, heard and felt on the infamous day when war was brought onto our land and perpetrated against our people.
It was on a Tuesday. People in Manhattan had begun what should have been just another day at work. They were people from all walks of life. Some were CEOs of major companies, some were custodians and some were cooks, but NONE of those people who went to work on that Tuesday were there to fight a war. They were unduly attacked and murdered simply because they were Americans.
At 8:45AM the World Trade Center was hit by American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 which was en route from Boston to Los Angeles with 92 people on board.
At 9:03AM the second Trade Center building was hit by American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 which was en route from Dulles Airport near Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles with 58 passengers, four flight attendants and two pilots on board.
By 9:40AM, the FAA halted all air traffic and closed down all of the U.S. airports, but by 9:45AM in Washington, D.C., a plane crashed into the Pentagon. President Bush declared the events an "apparent terrorist attack." Two minutes later, at 9:47AM, the President was boarded onto Air Force One and taken to safety at Barkesdale Air Force base in Shreveport, La.
At 10:00AM the 110 story tall south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Five minutes later the White House was evacuated. At 10:29AM the second tower collapsed.
The passengers on board the United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 which was en route from Newark, NJ to San Francisco, had heard of the other airplane crashes. Their plane was hijacked as well. The thirty-eight passengers and seven crewmembers opted to take action and fight the hijackers. Thirty-two year old Todd Beamer lead the group with a battle cry of “Let’s Roll!”.
At 10:48AM their plane crashed southeast of Pittsburgh. That plane was possibly meant to crash in to the White House. The bravery exhibited by those passengers saved the nation the loss of our beloved White House.
All major tourist attractions where masses of people gathered were evacuated and shut down. The United Nations building was shut down in New York and military aircrafts flew overhead in defense of the air space over major cities. Pilots expressed how difficult it was to utilize the training they had learned for war, knowing full well that now they were patrolling a war zone right here on our homeland.
And on that day, September 11, 2001 the world as we knew it changed.
They say time heals all, but five years hasn’t been enough. America’s wound inflicted by the attack on 9-11 is still raw. Millions of people are returning to ground zero in New York to pay homage to the fallen and to remind themselves about what really happened.
So much has been said to dilute and muddle 9-11. Conspiracy theories exist for just about every possibility whether it makes any logical sense at all. America has been splintered at to what really happened on 9-11 and why.
But as we approach this fifth anniversary of that day in Infamy for this generation, in my mind and heart I know what happened. Bin Laden commissioned AlQueda to carry out an attack against America. It wasn’t their first. They had attacked us several times before in America and abroad.
They did not attack us because they love George W. Bush and would like to bolster his standing within some secret world government entity.
Our government didn’t pay them to attack us so that we could take over their oil fields. Time has proven that conspiracy wrong as we have seen the price of oil go through the roof.
They attacked us because they follow a brand of Islam that dictates that they must kill the great satan, America. They believe that it is their religious mandate to destroy us, regardless of whether we are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, rich, poor, conservative or liberal. I know this is hard for Liberals to grasp—but when and if this enemy comes, they won’t care how much stonewalling and political water you carried for them and for their cause. Liberals will die as Americans on that day just like the rest of us.
We are fighting a war for our right to exist, as a sovereign nation, as people free to self-determine our lives and our faith.
On Monday, we should all take a moment to remember the events of 9-11 and to thank God for all who placed themselves in harm’s way to protect us.
