Pope's Apology Fails To Halt Islamic Uproar

Pope's apology fails to halt Islamic uproar

Muslims leaders around the world demanded a more personal apology from the Pope last night after the Vatican said he "sincerely regrets" the offence caused by remarks which they claimed had insulted Islam.

Senior Vatican officials tried to damp down fury over the speech in which the Pope quoted from a medieval text saying that the Prophet Mohammed had brought the world "only evil and inhuman" things.

Activists from the Daughters of Faith protest against the Pope

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's secretary of state, issued a statement saying that the Pope's remarks had been misinterpreted.

He "sincerely regrets that certain passages of his address could have sounded offensive to the sensitivities of the Muslim faithful, and should have been interpreted in a manner that in no way corresponds to his intentions".

The statement expressed the Pope's "esteem" for Muslims and emphasised that he intended to underline that there was "no place for violence in religion".

But street demonstrations and sporadic violence against Christian churches continued and left two of the world's largest religions still dangerously at odds.

"We want a personal apology from the Pope," said Mohammed Habib, the deputy leader of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood. A cleric linked to Somalia's powerful Islamist movement last night called for Muslims to "hunt down" and kill the Pope.

This is the 'religion of peace' that our president has spoken about.

Funny, the article has nothing to do with President Bush, who is already fighting this more than any other leader ever has.

uh, duh. These people just want to kill, kill, and kill. They love any possible tiny sliver of anything that will allow them to do this to anyone they deem not Islam. PERIOD.

Glad to see someone on our side issuing a non-apology when he is being targeted for intimidation. The Pope is saying: "You morons didn't even read the speech. It's not my fault you're stupid, but I am sorry that you are so stupid."

President Bush was correct years ago when he said this was a crusade. I'll never understand why he retracted that.

This uproar will certainly remind US voters that we do face a real terror threat. Many may even come to believe some of the more radical muslims who claim this will lead to war between islam and the west, Catholics in particular. This could end up hurting the dims, who everybody knows is soft on terrorists.

Ya gotta love this Pope!

(I guess being the Pope, he can't just say "F.O.A.D.!" to the arabs, eh?)

"A cleric linked to Somalia's powerful Islamist movement last night called for Muslims to "hunt down" and kill the Pope."

That would be a VERY, serious *error*, Mr Author. 1.4billion Christians v 1.2billion muslim-islamist-arabs? Not even close, trash-boy-author."

Buh-bye!

And yet... there seem to be so many Catholics who vote 'D' - is that just ignorance, or is it something far worse?

The islamos have this victimhood act down to a science, and we in the West seem only too happy to continue to enable them...

This whole thing is powerful PR to show the world, especially sleepy Americans, the danger and the vicioiusness of Islam. I hope they show this on every news program and talk about it for months to come... Thank you Mr. Pope...

Hey, why doesn't the Pope apologize like the Muzzies do, and say something like:

"I condemn all speech that is offensive to anyone."

...and then tell them to go to hell.

"The statement expressed the Pope's "esteem" for Muslims and emphasised that he intended to underline that there was "no place for violence in religion"."

Heh. I can see why the apology is falling short.

It's like saying, "I'm sorry you interpreted my words to mean that you are hot-headed, maniacal killers in the service of murderous invisible man in the sky. The message I intended to convey what that in this world, there is no place for hot-headed, maniacal killers in the service of murderous invisible men in the sky. Please don't hurt me."

Bush and his administration are being very silent.
