'Racist' transport poster pulled
September 17, 2006 RACISM complaints have forced Transperth to withdraw taxpayer-funded ads showing a gorilla wearing a fez. The Public Transport Authority confirmed that the campaign, which cost about $7000 and depicted an ape wearing what is sometimes considered an Islamic cap, was stopped after three complaints.
"The gorilla first appeared on July 22. We did not receive any feedback from the public until this week, when three complaints were lodged," PTA spokesman David Hynes said.

More stupidity.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me.
But what to the Shriners have to say about it?
rotfl-- this made me try to imagine what a gorilla in a burqa would look like
Ain't ever gonna do it without the fez on.

Ad campaign casts unfair aspersions on gorillas by connecting them with desert moon-god cult.
Bongo, Chief Primate of the Gorilla Rights Integrity Movement (GRIM), beat his chest this morning, in between using sign language to attack an Australian ad-campaign which appeared to connect his species with Islam.
"Islam stems from the pronoucements of an illiterate desert bumpkin," signed the Primate, "and has nothing to do with us forest-dwellers of central Africa. We are a species of peace. We chew bamboo shoots, while they shoot you."
"I never yet have seen a free gorilla wearing a fez, or any other sort of headgear," he continued. "It is a nasty insult to be connected with Islam, and we resent it."
Asked what he proposed to do about the implied insult, the Primate moved off and began chewing on some vegetation, which is a behavioral gesture of non-aggression for his kind.
The response needs to be "someone is always going to get their feelings hurt. This time it is yours. Live with it and move on. Next week it will be someone elses and you will think it's funny".
The Shriners? You mean that wasn't their first Noble at the new London temple?
Whats next, Canine Americans?

'Nuff Said!
Thanks for the Ping, Michael.
I'd be more afraid of angry Shriners than I would be Muslims.
I did a google search - fez ape
and found that 'Tiki Mugs' featuring an ape wearing a fez seem to be doing a brisk business. What a shame they will now have to be banned to prevent hurt feelings leading to a War of Civilizations.
See them at these links (and maybe order one of these soon-to-be hot collectibles from a more peaceful era) The Lure of the Forbidden, donchaknow.

Excellent!
ROFL!
Mr Hynes said research had indicated that the fez's origins were non- religious.
He said the ad graphic was part of a fantasy campaign that also had a giant squid attacking a ferry on the Swan River and a satellite that had fallen in front of a bus.
"(They) are intended to highlight a key benefit of TravelEasy . . . getting up-to-the-minute online messages about unexpected changes in public transport," he said. "Putting a fez on the gorilla was intended to suggest it was an escaped circus animal. No offence was intended."
They clearly wanted to pull the ads to avoid insulting the religion of peace.. Should have asked for their $7,000.00 back...
I'm outraged!
The Primates' Union complained about being compared to an Arab.
