An Iraqi militant group led by Al-Qaeda vowed massacre against the "worshippers of the cross" in response to a recent speech by Pope Benedict on Islam that caused offence across the Muslim world.
"We tell the worshipper of the cross (the Pope) that you and the West will be defeated, as is the case in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya," said an Internet statement by the Mujahideen Shura Council.
"We shall break the cross and spill the wine. ... God will (help) Muslims to conquer Rome. ... God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money and descendants the bounty of the mujahideen," said the statement.
It was posted on Sunday on an Internet site often used by al Qaeda and other militant groups.
The Pope already apologised for his quote of 14th Century Christian emperor Constantine who said the Prophet Muhammad had brought the world only "evil and inhuman" things.
They had been taken out of contest, and the pontiff regretted the fact that many Islam followers, including the leaders of some nations, took his words literally and were deeply offended.

The Pope needs to step up. I was hoping that his comments before the upcoming meeting with high level muslims would be the equivalent of throwing down the gauntlet, to challenge them to come to grips and actively preach against the violent jihadists.
These people are animals and I pray the heartbeat of islam is silenced forever in the coming years. It is not a religion, it is a cult of death and hatred.
