MUMBAI, India - Police are close to solving the case of the July commuter train bombings in Mumbai that killed more than 200 people, a top official said Thursday. Police have arrested 15 people since the attack, in which seven bombs ripped through the suburban trains in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay.
"We are close to a breakthrough. Investigations are at a crucial stage," said P.S. Pasricha, director-general of police for Maharashtra state. He refused to give any details.
"We should be able to reveal details in a few days," Pasricha said.
Investigators have said they believe the Pakistan-based Islamic militant group, Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, was responsible for the blasts in India's financial and entertainment capital, and it was assisted by the Students Islamic Movement of India, a banned Islamic group.
Pakistan denies any involvement in the terror attack that killed 207 people and injured 700.
Lashkar-e-Tayyaba is one of the Islamic groups fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan since 1989. More than 68,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
Wow the AP is actually reporting on that story? It completely distracts from the "Muslims are violent because of Israel and the US" line of thought. I thought it was completely swept under the rug.
