Abbas: Unity gov't will recognize Israel

The Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS — Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the U.N. General Assembly Thursday that the planned national unity government will recognize Israel.

The Hamas-led Palestinian government that won elections in January has refused to recognize Israel, end violence, and honor past agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, which Abbas heads.

Abbas told the assembly's annual ministerial meeting that he has recently sought to establish a government of national unity "that is consistent with international and Arab legitimacy and that responds to the demands of the key parties promoting Mideast peace _ recognition, ending violence and honoring past agreements.

"I would like to reaffirm that any future Palestinian government will commit to all the agreements that the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian National Authority have committed to," he said.

These include the letters of mutual recognition exchanged on Sept. 9, 1993, by the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian chairman Yasser Arafat, whom Abbas called "the two great late leaders."

"These letters contain mutual recognition between Israel and the PLO, renunciation of violence, and commitment to negotiations as the path towards reaching a permanent solution that will lead to the establishment of the independent state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel," Abbas said.

Hamas' refusal to recognize Israel has led to international sanctions that have devastated the Palestinian economy. Israel and Western donors cut off hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to the Palestinians.

Facing intense pressure as it has been unable to pay tens of thousands of civil servants because of the sanctions, Hamas agreed last week to form a coalition with Abbas' moderate Fatah party in hopes of lifting the boycott imposed by Western countries.

The coalition talks have stalled in recent days as the U.S. seeks assurances that the Islamic militant group will renounce violence and recognize the Jewish state.

Shoot...the one Yasser Arafat signed wasn't worth the paper it was written on...and neither would one be, signed by Abbas.

Doesn't matter if he means it or not. The fact that he's doing it will change the Middle East.

Well, this is finally the breakthrough that we've been waiting for. There should be mideast peace by the end of fall. Then we can all don flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts and head for the tropics.

No, actually, this could be a very big deal, if it comes with a promise of no violence, which would be logical given recognition. The PA is doing this because of sanctions.

The Road Map to Eurabia's heart is a guerrilla war Road Map for the Arab/Persian nations into Israel. The Road Map ruse is dead.

Hamas has already said they will not recognize Israel. Whatever Abbas is saying is for the money.

Big freakin' deal. Yasser Arafat also gave a promise of no violence.

Just how stupid are we to believe this same crap over and over?

Hamas to Abbas: Pretend to recognize Israel and denounce violence so we can get more money for bombs.

"negotiations as the path towards reaching a permanent solution that will lead to the establishment of the independent state of Palestine "alongside" (Inside) the state of Israel," Abbas said.

Meanwhile Abbas said in Arabic, "Don't worry, nothing is going to change. I am just saying these things in English to placate the stupid Kafirs so they will quit killing our leaders and give us money again. Once we are strong enough we will slit their throats."

Doesn't matter, because the mass-murdering members of the organizations will still refuse, and keep up the killing.

Gaza will celebrate this news by lobbing hundreds of homemade missiles into Israel.

You can't trust anything a 'palestinian' says - even if he were to swear on the life of his mother, wife, sister or children. ( Or the koran, come to think of it.) Allah permits lies for the glory of allah!

allah permits child sacrifice too, judging by the way the 'palestinians' hide behind children.

'palestinians' are the children only the UN could love...because the 'refugees' are an INDUSTRY that extorts money from those who go to work and gives to those who don't - some 24,000 people work for UNWRA doling out OUR money to these parasites!

Gaza has hundreds of metal-workshops. Not a single plate, mug bucket or cup is sold from this production. There's not an item to be found stamped 'made in Gaza' (I read this somewhere or other) because all that production is blown up.

Without the UN extorting money from the world, the 'palestinians' would live in a perfect islamic world. A mud hut and a palm tree - and a donkey if they are fortunate enough.

My sympathy to the donkeys.
