Merkel call to stand firm over terrorists
The Scotsman ^ | September 28, 2006 | MADELINE CHAMBERS

ANGELA Merkel, the German chancellor, yesterday urged her people not to bow to fears of Islamic violence after a Berlin opera house cancelled a Mozart work over concerns that scenes might enrage Muslims and pose a security risk.

"I think the cancellation was a mistake. I think self-censorship does not help us against people who want to practise violence in the name of Islam," she told reporters.

Mrs Merkel's comments, fuelled a row over the cancellation of Mozart's Idomeneo that overshadowed a government-sponsored conference to promote dialogue with the country's 3.2 million Muslims.

The Deutsche Oper Berlin pulled Idomeneo, which has a scene depicting the severed heads of Mohammed, Buddha and Jesus, after police warned it might pose an "incalculable" security risk.

Germany was always the country most likely to leave the Axis of Weasels.

The more I read about Merkel the more I like her. Note that they were afraid of the reaction by Muslims, not by Buddhists or Christians.

She talks a good line and yet releases terrorists from German prisons. Who promptly run right back to their home base.

Perhaps that had already been decided at the courts level before she assumed office, though. Still a poor move on Germany's part.

Even Schroeder tried to reform the tax structure but met with such fierce opposition.

From what I am hearing, tho, Merkel has already caved on any reformation of their tax system.

Does she have the ability to reform the country. For the most part the Germans seem accepting of their nanny state lives.

Again, I think there has to be a crisis. The Germans, however, are more realistic than the French, in my opinion.

A German politician with a backbone, ANGELA Merkel. Who'da thunk it and a skirt no less! Could she be a German Maggie Thatcher?

The French are a hopeless lot. Nothing has changed. No backbone, never had one, never will....at least in my lifetime.

Merkel has backbone but she has to deal with many politicians who only know pandering.
