(Cringe!) May I suggest you avoid Hollywood/gang slang, and call it a "sidearm", "pistol", "carry gun", "Glock", "45" or something professionally neutral instead of than "piece" "heat" "roscoe" etc.?

It's a shame. I lived there from 1998-2000. Houston had crime as any big city does, but people there didn't have the impact of 50 thousand NOLA refugees, either.
