Yet another tax on the poor.

They won't outlaw cigarettes because they can keep piling on taxes onto these addicted people. I mean, think about this - you're taxing a product that virtually every health official will say, into a camera, that the users are smoking out of physical compulsion.

That's criminal to me.

Roll your own, folks of Michigan. The taxes on two cartons will pay for your machine.

Does Michigan have deficits?

Raising cig taxes that high won't bring
in more revenue.
Cook county in Illinois your heighbor did
this twicw in three years. The result showed
decreased revenue from cig. taxes.

People will seek out cheaper alternatives whether
it is from online purchases or illegal bootlegged
cigs.

By the way Cook county will have a $500M shortfall
this year. Of course it's controlled by the most
inept Democratic regime in our history.

The real tragedy is they are about to be re-elected.
Blue state self-destruction.

According to the free-market Mackinac Center for Public Policy’s analysis of United Van Lines data, Michigan is now the No. 1 state in the continental United States for outbound traffic. An estimated 65 percent of the moving company’s Michigan interstate traffic is families moving out of the state, headed to more economically open and vital destinations.

Not only is Granholm a communist, the legislature is her very own group of useful idiots.

The local RINO showed up for a town meeting. When asked why he backed the Zoning Enabling Act, the klutz answered he did so because Granholm told him to.

ZEA, for those not up to speed, is Michigan's version of soviet socialism. Wait until your local unelected zoning board tells you can't cut trees on your property, can't build a house for your children on your property and that you have to pay out bonds, cash payments and other tribute to the state in order to use your property.

In another reality, the people running Michigan would be classed as insane asylum inmates.

This is why I left MI in 2000 - I saw their attitude about taxes and social engineering, and I figured it would come to this.

And I took MILLIONS in business with me. LOL.

Already happened in my city. We now have to petition the 'Zoning Board of Appeals' to request a review of a turned down request by the Zoning Board --$$$$ In addition, we have the 'Downtown Development Authority' which has access to the general funds bank collected thru taxes, and the monies obtained from the public can only be spent on their own businesses. Both these boards have the same members.

In the meantime I have to spend $50 for a permit to plant a tree which I purchase and plant on my own property.

Yes it is old. Just meant as a reminder of tax increases under Granhom. The first week she was in office, she raised commercial truck licensing fees. She also raised state fuel (kerosene, diesel, home heating oil, natural gas, propane, and gas taxes later, as well as chopping school funding while raising state college tuitions. She has not been too buddy buddy with Kwame Kilpatrick-Detroits 'mayor'. Especially this past week since 250 million will be cut to Detroit schools since the student count is down. Detroit always is Dumbocrat, with Ann Arbor, Flint, and Saginaw in tow. We are the only state to have an additional 'Small Business Tax' as well. Devos is a succesful businessman, and thats what this state needs. You can't blame everything on the decline of the auto industry. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan really has no auto manufacturing and their unemployment rate is between 25-40%. What were doing with a Canadien governor is beyond me. It's pretty sad when her commercials proclaim creating 600 jobs from her Japan visit--whoopee.

Wow! Is she a relative of Governor Baldacci of Maine?  Sounds like another cookie cutter!

Not any more. The SBT is history. Now we're waiting to find out how they'll replace it.

The big tax increases on Cigarettes here in CA in 1989 was a reason why I stopped smoking in January 1989. They have not stopped placing these huge taxes on tobacco products since then. Taxing a single product should be against the law in this country. Especially when those being taxed are, in this case, primarily the poorest of citizens. If the reason they are placing these outrageous taxes on this product is because of the dangers of the product, then outlaw the product. Don't place a tax burden upon a specific segment of the population.
