Nancy Pelosi: Then and Now
In an October 5 presentation to students at Georgetown University, House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi intoned that There are many bad things that can be said about Congress. But the fact that the Republican leadership in this Congress chose to protect Mark Foley for political reasons, rather than to protect the children, cannot go without some taking on of responsibility."
She then called on the House Ethics Committee to subject the matter to harsh scrutiny, insisting that members with knowledge of the matter must testify under oath.
Flashback to July 27, 1990. The House of Representatives voted 408 to 18 to reprimand Congressman Barney Frank (D-MASS) after rejecting bids to expel or censure him. A reprimand is the mildest of the House's formal ethics sanctions and does not result in any loss of authority, seniority or committee positions.
The reprimand cited Frank for two ethical transgressions: fixing" parking tickets incurred by his lover, prostitute Stephen Gobie, and writing a misleading memo on behalf of Gobie, who was on probation for cocaine and pornography charges. Frank was ordered to pay the District of Columbia for the parking violations.
Frank had met Gobie in 1985 when he paid him for a sexual encounter and subsequently hired him as a personal assistant. The relationship later came to light when Gobie spoke to reporters. Gobie later accepted $50,000 from Penthouse magazine for explicit details.
A separate motion to upgrade the sanction to a censure, spearheaded by congressman Newt Gingrich, was defeated 287 to 141.
The 18 members voting against the reprimand were mostly conservative Republicans, who saw a reprimand as much too lenient. However, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi also voted against the reprimand, and was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle as saying A reprimand was too severe a punishment for the mistakes that Barney made.
My, what a difference a day makes!
I wish I could rip her face off, but it looks like someone already beat me to it.
Activism/Chapters not
It'd be like trying to rip the skin off a snaredrum!
"But the fact that the Republican leadership in this Congress chose to protect Mark Foley for political reasons, rather than to protect the children, cannot go without some taking on of responsibility."
OK Nancy. I find myself agreeing with you. I would not want to find out that Democrats knew about this months ago and kept it a secret from the public either.
Now, here is what I propose.
After the election, we investigate WHO knew WHAT WHEN.
Of course, you will go under oath and tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about what YOU knew, and WHEN you knew it....right???
I say fire ANYONE associated with the coverup and get rid of ALL the homosexuals in the Republican party.
1990? Are you sure about that date? I thought it was in the end of the 1970s when this occurred.
Where's the pictures of Nancy and Schumer and Hillary marching in the GAY PRIDE PARADES!! What is it that have to be PROUD of anyway???
Such a moron pig of a ThugoRat socialist. Hey Nazi, er, Nancy....who was it that protected your idol, Billy Boy, from not being tried in the Senate and helped to keep him out of Federal prison???
Who was that Nancy??? Hypocritical moron [female dog].
From Rush's website a Top Ten list we should all read and quote:
10. Sen. Daniel Inouye. The 82-year-old Hawaii Democrat was accused in the 1990s by numerous women of sexual harassment. Democrats cast doubt on the allegations and the Senate Ethics Committee dropped its investigation.
9. Former Rep. Gus Savage. The Illinois Democrat was accused of fondling a Peace Corps volunteer in 1989 while on a trip to Africa. The House Ethics Committee decided against disciplinary action in 1990.
8. Rep. Barney Frank. The outspoken Massachusetts Democrat hired a male prostitute who ran a prostitution service from Franks residence in the 1980s. Only two Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to censure him in 1990.
7. Former Sen. Brock Adams. The late Washington Democrat was forced to stop campaigning after numerous accusations of drugging, assault and rape, the first surfacing in 1988.
6. Former Rep. Fred Richmond. This New York Democrat was arrested in 1978 for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old. He remained in Congress and won re-electionbefore eventually resigning in 1982 after pleading guilty to tax evasion and drug possession.
5. Former Rep. John Young. The late Texas Democrat increased the salary of a staffer after she gave in to his sexual advances. The congressman won re-election in 1976 but lost two years later.
4. Former Rep. Wayne Hays. The late Ohio Democrat hired an unqualified secretary reportedly for sexual acts. Although he resigned from Congress, the Democratic House leadership stalled in removing him from the Administration Committee in 1976.
3. Former Rep. Gerry Studds. He was censured for sexual relationship with underage male page in 1983. Massachusetts voters returned him to office for six more terms.
2. Former Rep. Mel Reynolds. The Illinois Democrat was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault with a 16-year-old. President Bill Clinton pardoned him before leaving office.
1. Sen. Teddy Kennedy. The liberal Massachusetts senator testified in defense of nephew accused of rape, invoking his family history to win over the jury in 1991.10. Sen. Daniel Inouye. The 82-year-old Hawaii Democrat was accused in the 1990s by numerous women of sexual harassment. Democrats cast doubt on the allegations and the Senate Ethics Committee dropped its investigation.
In 1983, then-Democratic Rep. Gerry Studds of Massachusetts was caught in a similar situation. In his case, Studds had sex with a male teenage page -- something Foley hasn't been charged with.
Did Studds express contrition? Resign? Quite the contrary. He rejected Congress' censure of him and continued to represent his district until his retirement in 1996.
In 1989, Rep. Barney Frank, also of Massachusetts, admitted he'd lived with Steve Gobie, a male prostitute who ran a gay sex-for-hire ring out of Frank's apartment. Frank, it was later discovered, used his position to fix 33 parking tickets for Gobie.
What happened to Frank? The House voted 408-18 to reprimand him -- a slap on the wrist. Today he's an honored Democratic member of Congress, much in demand as a speaker and "conscience of the party."
In 2001, President Clinton, who had his own intern problem, commuted the prison sentence of Illinois Rep. Mel Reynolds, who had sex with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer and pressured her to lie about it. (Reynolds also was convicted of campaign spending violations.)

In early 2004, according to Roll Call, Mr. Murtha "reportedly leaned on U.S. Navy officials to sign a contract to transfer the Hunters Point Shipyard to the city of San Francisco."
Laurence Pelosi, nephew of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, at the time was an executive of the company which owned the rights to the land.
The same article also reported how Mr. Murtha has been behind millions of dollars worth of earmarks in defense appropriations bills that went to companies owned by the children of fellow Pennsylvania Democrat, Rep. Paul Kanjorski.
Meanwhile, the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan campaign-finance watchdog group, lists Mr. Murtha as the top recipient of defense industry dollars in the current 2006 election cycle.

I'll split the difference. TI"S BOTH....
I agree, Nancy - here's your subpoena...
And for those who don't already know this,
Nancy Pelosi endorsed Gerry Studds for reelection AFTER the scandal involving Studds having sex with a page in 1983 was revealed.
So much for Pelosi's faux outrage of Hastert & the GOP!
