Adwatch: Poizner criticizes foe on ethics, donations [ Bustamante exposed!]

Steve Poizner, the Republican candidate for insurance commissioner, is running an ad in which he accuses the Democratic nominee, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, of taking illegal campaign contributions and accepting money from the insurance industry.

The 30-second ad began airing last week in markets around the state, including Sacramento. Following is the text of the ad and an analysis by Aurelio Rojas of The Bee Capitol Bureau.d

• NARRATOR: Cruz Bustamante -- caught laundering millions in illegal campaign contributions. He was hit with the largest ethics fine in the law's history.

Now Bustamante is running for insurance commissioner. For months he raked in thousands of dollars in contributions from the insurance companies -- the same companies he's supposed to regulate if elected.

If we can't trust Cruz Bustamante now, how can we trust him as insurance commissioner?

Cruz Bustamante -- if you Cruz, you lose.

• ANALYSIS: Poizner, a billionaire businessman making his first run for statewide office, has already contributed about $6 million of his personal funds to run an aggressive campaign that, in part, attempts to portray Bustamante as beholden to special interests. Recent polls show Bustamante with a narrow lead, but Republicans believe they have a good chance of capturing the office.

In a settlement with the Fair Political Practices Commission, Bustamante admitted . . .

In fairness, Bustamentalcase returned the money, although not immediately.

In TRUTH . . . Bustamante returned the money only after the press repoter that he'd taken, and right before the primary, when he realized that he was about to lose one-third of his party's to a nobdy from Los Angeles.
