OXFORD, England - A coroner ruled Friday that U.S. forces unlawfully killed a British television journalist in the opening days of the Iraq war.

Deputy Coroner Andrew Walker said he would ask the attorney general to take steps to bring to justice those responsible for the death of Terry Lloyd, 50, a veteran reporter for the British television network ITN.

Sorry this happened, but the softies in Europe -- and here -- should realize that this is what goes on in a war zone. Anyone not wanting to take the risks therein should just stay out.

Had Saddam legally complied with the UN mandates the lawful action of removing him would not have been necessary. Please forward your complaint to Saddam's attorneys as Saddam bears sole responsibility for this unfortunate death.

Good point. If this kind of thing is ruled "unlawful" on the battlefield, next thing we'll see is the enemy disguising all their vehicles as ambulances -- much like what the Palestinians do at Israeli checkpoints.

"The coroner said Friday that a civilian drove up in a minivan, pulled a U-turn and picked up four wounded Iraqi soldiers, then saw Lloyd with a press card around his neck and helped him into the van. Lloyd was shot in the head as the van drove off toward a hospital, the coroner said."

A van full of Iraqi soldiers. Sounds like a valid target to me. It did not have a red cross or crescent on it. For all our guys knew, he was simply helping them so they could fight another day.

Their coroners must work differently than ours.

I thought they only looked for the "cause" of death.

besides, that....I don't believe much reported by reporters.

This is why I so thankful the US did not join the international court. It was one of President Bush's best decisions.

"Deputy Coroner Andrew Walker said he would ask the attorney general to take steps to bring to justice those responsible for the death of Terry Lloyd, 50. . ."

I suggest that anyone indicted file harrasment charges against Walker in the U.S., especially in a place like Texas. Done right, we can probably get a judgement against Walker so big that he will be depending upon the dole for his squeak and bubble until he is 120.

If the U.S does not have laws to prevent this type of judicial bullying of American servicemen by outside countries, it is well past time to make some -- and have them target those that file such charges financially.

From the article:
U.S. authorities didn't allow servicemen to testify at the inquest. Several submitted statements that the coroner ruled inadmissible.
Can you say kangaroo court?

A reporter "embedded" with the enemy is a legitimate target!

Remember when we all had to pull back on that huge trigger?< /sarcasm>

I am sad for his death, but the world has lost perspective on what a war is. It's like back in WWI when the English soldiers thought they'd pop over and win in a few months. Many thought it was a camping trip until the deaths started.

How about....

1. Libel (written) and slander (spoken).

2. Intentional infliction of emotional distress.

3. Negligent infliction of emotional distress.

My guess is that the closest that this coroner ever got to combat was the cap gun he owned when he was 9.
