Bush to campaign for troubled lawmakers

WASHINGTON - A congressman who admitted to having an affair and a senator accused of using racial slurs will get some political help from President Bush next week.

Bush will make campaign stops Thursday in Pennsylvania and Virginia to help the two troubled Republicans as the GOP struggles to maintain its endangered grip on the House and Senate.

"The President has made a commitment, and he's going to fulfill the commitment," White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday.

Bush's appearances are intended to give a boost to four-term Rep. Don Sherwood (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., and Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record), R-Va.

Sherwood had one of the safest seats in Congress as his conservatism played well in his heavily Republican, rural district in northeastern Pennsylvania. Democrats didn't even bother fielding a candidate in the last two elections.

Then last year Sherwood admitted to a five-year extramarital affair with a woman 35 years his junior. He settled a lawsuit claiming he had choked her.

"Mr. Sherwood has certainly admitted to what has gone on, and the president also believes that we're all sinners, we all seek forgiveness, and in this particular case, he's supporting Don Sherwood's candidacy," Snow said.

Allen has spent weeks rebutting accusations he used racist language and liked Confederate symbols. The furor began Aug. 11, when the senator called a volunteer for his opponent "macaca," considered by some to be a racial slur, during a political rally.

"George Allen is not a bigot. Period," Snow said. "And you've had a number of black leaders who've come forward to make the point.

"So the president, absolutely, supports his candidacy," Snow said.

Snow suggested that Allen's opponent, Democrat Jim Webb, was vulnerable for things he has said. Webb, a former Navy secretary under President Reagan, argued in a 1979 magazine article that women are not fit to command men in battle and criticized their admission to the U.S. Naval Academy.

The Rats never stop. It would not be a problem if the Repubs knew how to street fight like the gutter 'Rats do.

We'll see if W's last minutes campaign push would do the magic like in the past 2 elections. I surely hope it would.

Yeah, that headline STINKS.

It makes it sound like President Bush is campaigning for criminals. "Troubled lawmakers" sounds like people in "trouble with the law."

That headline was totally misleading.

I am glad he is going to Virginia for Allen...

I don't know anything about Sherwood...so I probably shouldn't say anything...but, a 5 year affair?? yikes.

From the headline you'd expect him to be stumping for Mark Foley AND Harry Reid.

That is ugly to be sure. But once he is our nominee, as long as he hasn't done anything illegal...he's our nominee.

no matter what, defend the actions of any elected official or candidate with an "r" next to their name..............

vote for anyone you wish, but some candidates deserve to be rejected regardless of their party affiliation.

I think the opening line may merit an award for most biased report of the year. Allen has a solid lead and to portray him as a racist in the opening line is really offensive.

"A congressman who admitted to having an affair"

After Bill Clinton, they are going to start pretending this is the litmus test for a politician??

You have to ask? You truly are "pollyannaish"

"Rep. Don Sherwood (R)". Well, there you have it folks; another GOP hippocrit. Let's see: Bob Ney, Duke Cunningham, Tom Delay, Mark Foley......I'm convinced the Pubbies are doing everything in their power to make Nancy Pelosi the next Speaker of the House. If we do lose the House on November 7th, the only consolation I will have is that these scumbags deserve it. The sad part is, most people in this nation don't.

From the article: "A congressman who admitted to having an affair and a senator accused of using racial slurs will get some political help from President Bush next week. "

Propaganda 101. Tie a truth to an accusation. If AP was a person, we would find him registered Democrat.

So who is Terence Hunt? How did he get such power to put these words in front of the American people? I cancelled my subscription to my local liberal rag years ago. Providing aid and comfort to AP reporters by buying a newspaper which prints their propaganda was just too offensive to me.

I was being sarcastic, but now that you mention it...

Wait—is the President stumping for Ney, Cunningham, Delay or Foley? No? Then this is an attempt at guilt by association.

Sherwood is sketchy (although I probably wouldn't turn him out ONLY for having an affair), but the bottom line is that this is a msm attempt to further smear ALLEN who they see as a Presidential threat. We are not currently fighting the battle for fall of 2006. We are beginning the 2008 race.

And btw, I'm not sure I should be considered the pollyannaish one in this situation. Most of the time I vote for the best of two mediocre choices at best, and the best of two bad choices at worst. Strange that everyone is human! Even our side. It is those seeking perfection who are truly pollyannaish. LOL.
