China has been building a massive barbed wire and concrete fence along parts of its border with North Korea in the most visible sign of Beijing's strained ties with its once-cozy communist neighbor.
Scores of soldiers have descended on farmland near the border-marking Yalu River to erect concrete barriers 8 to 15 feet tall and string barbed wire between them, farmers and visitors to the area said.
Last week, they reached Hushan, a collection of villages 12 miles inland from the border port of Dandong.
"About 100 People's Liberation Army soldiers in camouflage started building the fence four days ago and finished it yesterday," said a farmer, who only gave his surname, Ai. "I assume it was built to prevent smuggling and illegal crossing."
Though the fence-building appears to have picked up in the days following North Korea's claimed nuclear test last week, experts said the project was approved in 2003. Experts and a local Hushan official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the project, said the military was in charge of the building.

Pure BS. N Korea doesn't want its people out, China doesn't want them in. Neither country cares about people.
I keep forgetting about China's lack of interest in refugees from NKorea. Now their bluster makes a little more sense. Just a little.
Looks like a crude low tech fence but since the PLA will be there, armed and ready to shoot, it'll work just fine. We could use one. Maybe get WalMart to import one. They sell everything else the Chinese make
They must be preparing for a flood of refugees to come pouring across their border. I wonder if they expect some country to do a premptive strike on NK?!?
No kidding!

U.S. Bishops Urge President Bush to Veto Secure Fence Act (Barf Alert)
http://www.usnewswire.com/ ^ | 16 October 2006 | John Gehring
Bishop William Skylstad, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has sent a letter to President George W. Bush asking him to veto H.R. 6061, the Secure Fence Act of 2006 that would authorize construction of up to 700 miles of fencing and barriers along the southern border of Mexico.

Chinese leaders are privately laughing their a$$es off watching the West react to the test...and they'll laugh even harder if (when?) South Korea is overwhelmed with refugees because they know that the South Koreans will *not* shoot to kill and will *not* build any kind of wall.
China has no love for Korea and Koreas. When they entered the war in 1950 it was a classic case of hitting at the U.S., not siding with Koreans.
China lives in dread fear that the Koreans will opour into China, hungry and angry. They could cause a loss of stability. I went to that part of China once: Harbin. It snowed in May! North of North Korea is not God's Country!
The Chinese have always been good at walls...

Can they come here after?
Looks like they are expecting to see a bunch of refugees at the border in the near future. And are planning accordingly.
Wonder what it would take to get Mexico to do an underground test so we could get our fence done.
If NK's was legit, a couple of years'.
I wonder if it will be a 'great wall' haha.
I suggest that you replay the tapes of Tienamin Square and then come back and tell us again how frightened China is of North Koreans.
My sense is that you're giving Chinese leaders far too much credit for being basically decent or peace loving.
Kim Mentally Ill is *very* useful to the Chinese leaders in their long term quest to develop a stranglehold on Asia and to weaken the West. And they do not fear,in the least, anything that might come of sanctions...or anything else...that might happen there. And that's true regardless of what they might be saying publicly or in leaked reports.
Well, I think NK was a legitimate fizzle, but it was enough for China to work on a wall.
We may be able to get Mexico to have a failed test in less than two years.
Don't know if it was true, but I thought it best not to test to see if he was funning me. I don't think he was. I saw some scary stuff in that country, and for the most part, they don't even bother to count the bodies.
*BUMP*!
Wonder if North Korea is going to take this issue of the China wall to the UN?
Farmland? Oh, wait...that's right...we are talking about the China side of the border.
I still don't get it, though...NK is the worker's paradise! Why would anyone want to leave? I hear they have socialized medicine, so things must be really great!
