Laughable Suspensions Aren't Nearly Enough(Miami & FIU Football Brawl)
ESPN ^ | Oct. 16, 2006 | Gene Wojciechowski

Larry Coker? Fired.

Lamar Thomas? Fired.

The bench-clearing brawl resulted in 31 suspensions between the two schools.

Anthony Reddick and Brandon Meriweather? Dismissed.

The other 11 University of Miami players and 18 Florida International University players who took part in Saturday night's horrifying football gang warfare? Suspended for the remainder of the season.

Miami's 35-0 "victory" against FIU? Nullified. Wiped off the books.

Something has to change at Miami, beginning with the punishment. Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford meant well when he initially issued a one-game suspension for all 13 UM players involved in this disaster area, but the penalty was laughable. It isn't a slap on the wrist; it's a soothing caress and manicure.

"These suspensions send a clear and definitive message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated," said Swofford.

No, they didn't. They sent a clear and definitive message that you miss only one game if you do what Reddick did, which was swing his five-pound helmet at FIU players like it was a medieval weapon. Had he connected with skull or flesh, he could have killed somebody. Then what would have the ACC done? Two-game suspensions?

But, to their credit, the conference and UM came to their senses and announced late Monday afternoon that Reddick was suspended indefinitely. Indefinitely is better than one game, but not as good as gone forever.

As for Coker, I think we can all agree he's a nice enough man, much in the same way a substitute teacher is nice enough. And like a substitute teacher, his players act as if he doesn't exist.

"I do have a grip on this program," Coker has insisted. "Don't ever doubt that. Don't ever doubt that."

Both schools' football programs should be canceled for the remainder of the year.

Every player involved should be banned for life from football of any kind in the US.

That would be the right thing to do but Thug U has so lowered the behavior bar over the last twenty years that the alums are pointing toward the fact the Miami players didn't get their knifes and guns out the lockers after the melee break. Miami like many sports programs (i.e. ThugBA) overlooks the rap sheet in favor of the stat sheet. My only question is when a Miami football player is fronted the sheepskin is in Crips Blue or Bloods Red.

If they suspend those kids for "fighting," they're convicting the innocent. I mean, can't someone teach a semi-professional athlete how to throw a punch or at least stomp someone without looking like a klutz?

The whole state is perverted when it comes to college FB. Look at the idiotic chop thing came from Florida State!

How the heck did a class act like Rex Grossman come from there? Oh he grew up in small town Indiana.

well he has to say that, otherwise he gives his already growing crowd of detractors exactly what he wants.

He's not John L Smith, so he won't melt down on national TV or start slapping himself during the press conferences.

Did you see where Michael Irvin, of ALL PEOPLE, said that Coker needs to be fired along with that color commentator from Comcast?

The funny thing is that Miami is a very good private school.

A pretty good sign with that remark that he doesn't.

I heard a program through the Miami PD brought hundreds of kids to the game. And this is what they saw. And add this to the mix...

TV analysts could be fired for comments during brawl 16-Oct-2006

Well the entertainment staff got a little out of hand. As long as they were beating on each other big deal, it is just like in professional Wrestling, something to give the fans something to chat about. If we were truly worried about their health, we would not encourage them to play a dangerous game for our entertainment.

That's a bit much. There's enough film footage. How about taking every player who physically assaulted another and filing charges against them.

Rex is From Florida. Not Miami or Florida State. But thugs are from all 3.

iT'S A COMMON lie that there are no requirements for a talented football player to get into those schools. They do have to be able to breathe.

What does an average Florida football player get in freshman basket weaving? Nothing it's a senior course!

Great academic schools for the general public. Football players not.

The biggest laugh is when they're called student athletes

Proud alum of a school where the players don't win titles but they win degrees.

That makes me think of a "Peace and Hospitality" night they had at a Durham Bulls game back in the mid-90s.

The game turned into being one of the worst brawls in minor league baseball history. Something like 20 players total ejected and an hour long brawl.
