THE United Muslim Women Association (MWA) today condemned comments by a senior Islamic cleric that women who wore revealing clothes invited sexual assault.
Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilaly compared skimpily-dressed women to "uncovered meat" and suggested they were "the problem" that caused sexual attacks, The Australian reported today.
Maha Abdo, manager of the association, said she was shocked by the comments, which they did not reflect mainstream Muslim beliefs.
"From what I know of the imam, he's always been very supportive of women's rights and women's issues, and advocate of women," she said.
Speaking from the association's offices in Lakemba in Sydney's southwest, just 200m up the road from the Mosque where Sheik Hilaly is imam, Ms Abdo expressed fears that Muslim women would face a backlash.
"We are constantly having to justify our position as Muslim women," she said.
"We are continually having to say Muslim women have rights. We are concerned about the consequences of the reporting today."
Ms Abdo said she "disagreed totally" with Sheik Hilaly's words and said there should be no blame on victims of sex attacks.

Where's all the woman's libbers right now? How come they're not jumping all over this? Jesus, the first moment that they have a chance to actually do something useful (i.e. anything that messes with the Mussies), they're nowhere in sight.

Muslim women are chattel property under sharia law. It is virtually impossible to prove rape. The burqa stems from a silly incident in Muhammad's life when he was surrounded by "angels" who fled upon seeing the "form" of a woman. Henceforth he decreed that only a woman's face and hands could be visible so as not to "frighten the angels". Getting "stoned" in an Islamic country is much less desirable than the days of Haight Ashbury.

I keep saying, the way to beat these bastids is for the women to cut them off! If the women told them to go to hell, they wouldn't have so many babies to blow up. I can just hear the old man saying, "I will go and Jihad the infadel so I can go to paradise." Then the muzzie woman beats his a$$ with a broom and sez, "What, I'm not as good as 72 virgins?" You are "CUT OFF!" " Speaking of cut off, don't you go to sleep!"
The Jihad would be over in a couple of months. The muzzie women are the key.

If they want us to believe there is such a thing as "mainstream beliefs" then get a muslim pope-imam.
Otherwise, beliefs are whatever some terror-supporting mullah says they are.

It is rather interesting to note how often we're having to have what Islam really stands for clarified, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

said she was shocked by the comments, which they did not reflect mainstream Muslim beliefs. "From what I know of the imam, he's always been very supportive of women's rights and women's issues, and advocate of women," she said. So, she didn't know the imam then. Apparently, she did not know mainstream Muslim beliefs either.

"We are concerned about the consequences of the reporting today."In her view, it is the REPORTING that is the cause of her concern.
In other words, if the infidel press had just shut up, her members would not feel threatened with a backlash.
That is the purpose of her comments: to deflect infidel anger so that her members will not be subject to criticism.

The imam, like most Muslim males, is afraid of women.

You are right. Unfortunately, they are doomed to live in such isolation and under such tight control, not to mention having no means of their own, that it is highly unlikely that they can do much in the way of changing things.

"Muslim women are chattel property under sharia law."
Correct. If this woman, like 1.5 billion other muslims, wants a global caliphate, she had better learn to put quit her job, put on her burkha, pull her daughters out of school and STFU.
Muslim women complaining about Sharia Law... she should be grateful she still has her head. Her problem is that she hasn't learned the Islamic virtues of mysogeny, oppression, death, rape, honor killings, genital mutilation, stoning and wife beatings. If she would just get on her knees and submit to these lofty values she'd quit her ridiculous whining about petty desires like freedom.
