Yeah, we were young and stupid. Luckily we didn't get hurt. Had a few close calls though.

One guy I knew got kidnapped. They took him to one of those shanty towns and were having a feast with his money while he laid tied-up in a hut. Luckily, he escaped and got back.

Yikes! That doesn't sound like too much fun. The best thing I can say about my 2 month "vacation" there is it taught me to never leave the U.S. again.

Not surprising. They have over 1400 murders a year in Kingston alone.

Some background

From Texas A&M Battalion:
Berbick was deported from the United States to his native Jamaica in December after the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service determined he illegally re-entered the country after being deported to Canada in 1997.

Berbick, 48, was deported after breaking the conditions of his 1994 parole and serving 15 months of a four-year sentence for rape, theft and misdemeanor assault in Florida.

Berbick, who beat Muhammad Ali in 1981 and won the heavyweight crown in 1985 on a decision over Pinklon Thomas, was convicted of assault in 1991 for holding a gun to his former business manager's head and accusing her of stealing $40,000.

A year later, he was convicted of raping a family baby sitter. The same year, he was convicted of second-degree grand theft for forging his ex-wife's signature to get a $95,000 mortgage on a house in Miramar, Fla.

Jamaica is a nice place if you never leave the confines of a resort. As soon as you leave, watch out!

It's like that for YEARS, unfortunately.

Kingston had a radio show the last time that I was there called something like "gun deaths" in which they would rattle off the names of police lured into traps the night before, hatcheted to death, all so that the thugs could then get their pistols (guns are illegal for everyone but the cops there, so the criminals attack the cops to get the guns).

Tourists seldom see the real Jamaica.

If you don't travel with a local or stay with the cab driver your life will be in danger. It's like Escape From New York after dark anywhere in Jamaica.
