China: First-ever Success in In-flight Refueling

With the recent first-ever success of in-flight refueling, which supplies fuel to a plane in flight, China rises to become a country with strategic military, which can conduct all-weather missions on both land and sea.

An air force unit in Guangzhou recently completed the successful in-flight refueling training for the first time in China. It made China the fifth country in the world with in-flight refueling capability, after Britain, U.S., Russia, and France, according to Oct. 29 report of Wenwei Bao in Hong Kong.

Chinese military experts said that the success is a great achievement that would free Chinese air force from the limits of short-distance tactics, and enables long-distance strike. Furthermore, it allows the shift from predominantly defensive tactic of guarding strategic targets to combined tactics of offense and defense.

The paper commented that, with the widespread use of in-flight refueling, U.S. was able to perform it about 52,000 times during the Gulf War, and 21,000 times during the Kosovo Crisis.

If they're going to field a fleet of tankers now, we'll just have to build more of these......

India has had this capability for years now. Or am I missing something?

Interesting that the Chinese are perfecting something that Ira Eaker, Carl Spatz and others were doing in the 1930's

A little Googling turns up references to Israel, Iran, Libya and Turkey also having AR capability. There are probably others.

This is factually wrong. In the Far East alone, Singapore and Australia have this capability. A lot of European countries also have it.

I'm guessing the writer meant to say the Chinese are only the 5th country to have developed their own refueling capability. All the other countries mentioned like Turkey and Israel etc use US or European developed air refueling planes.

At least that's my guess and I'm sticking to it.

Key sentence. Welcome PLAAF to what...1949? Just remember to properly defend the tankers. Otherwise, it is a very long swim home from Taiwan.

The PRC has had aerial refuelling tankers for years now. This is a poor piece of journalism.
