He's not alone. I know a lib who says the military is "grotesque". The military don't sit around the campfire and sing Kum-By-Yah. They suck up all kinds of money (hee, hee) away from what libs consider noble Socialist programs. They kill people and break things. My experience is that libs by and large despise the military. The fact that Bush has done his best to pour money into the military where the libs can't get to it only makes them more livid (genius, that was).
Then you add in the academic elitists. In their eyes, the men and women in the military are the losers, the ones who barely made it out of high school (if at all) and don't have the smarts or the drive to make it to college. Libs hold these people in unbridled contempt, and Kerry's slip is only that -- a slip that his colleagues and supporters are simply disciplined enough to avoid.
When Clinton was first inaugurated, there was a flyover by fighter aircraft, and many of his supporters in the crowd were visibly offended. There is a report that one mentioned his ire to a (lib) reporter, and the reporter said, "that's okay, they're OUR F-18's now". It's pretty pathetic that it takes that sort of reply to stifle their contempt of the military, if only for a moment.
The problem is that we are beset by the legacy of the spoiled hippies of the '60's, who are now all grown up but haven't learned a thing in the decades since. I can only hope that when they start to die off from old age that Socialism will begin to fade in this country as the gen-Reagan people take over.
