WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. intelligence community on Tuesday unveiled its own secretive version of Wikipedia, saying the popular online encyclopedia format known for its openness is key to the future of American espionage.

The office of U.S. intelligence czar John Negroponte announced Intellipedia, which allows intelligence analysts and other officials to collaboratively add and edit content on the government's classified Intelink Web much like its more famous namesake on the World Wide Web.

A "top secret" Intellipedia system, currently available to the 16 agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community, has grown to more than 28,000 pages and 3,600 registered users since its introduction on April 17. Less restrictive versions exist for "secret" and "sensitive but unclassified" material. The system is also available to the Transportation Security Administration and national laboratories.

Intellipedia is currently being used to assemble a major intelligence report, known as a national intelligence estimate, on Nigeria as well as the State Department's annual country reports on terrorism, officials said.

Some day it may also be the path intelligence officials take to produce the president's daily intelligence briefing....

This is good news. If they can get past the paranoia of sharing data and enforce the law concerning unlawful disclosure this may turn out to be a giant leap forward.

Oh, data should be pretty safe on NSA servers. A lot more so than on gummint laptops. Besides, if the Dems win, they'll shut it down anyway.

This is a major move forward in tearing down the intelligence "wall"

I'm not so sure about how you verify sourcing though

I should imagine the most classified data would be on secure servers (not connected to any external net).

Although with 64bit chips the cryptography would be nearly impossible to hack (I should imagine). IOW, even if it were tied into the Internet, the data would be secure to only those with Permission.

There are audit programs to see who goes where, what is touched and for how long. Any disclosure of sensitive data could be tracked to those who saw it.

I think this is Program is a plus for the Intelligence community. The Key (imo) is that Intell is perishable if it is not timely.

A "top secret" Intellipedia system,

It's not so secret now.

So can we add treasonous DEMS who want us to lose to the list?

The analyst is the source since the analsyst developed the data from the various bits and pieces of Intell.

Just id it by Analyst name, position and category. Another analyst can then read the info and merge the info or add to the article with new data. This is called sharing.

The intelligence data should be as secure like the data at Los Alamos. We can all sleep soundly.

>>>The system is also available to the Transportation Security Administration and national laboratories. <<<

Oh good. Wen Ho Lee and the guy at the airport that worries about your toothpaste tube being too big will get to peek at national intell secrets.

We need a small, self contained agency with the license and the funds to recruit those willing to "terminate with extreme prejudice" our enemies - such as Adhadminijad, Chavez, Assad, Nasrallah, Fidel, Mokta al Sadr and a few assorted Mullahs and madras-as teachers.

The best intell operation is worthless if you aren't willing to take action on the data. Clinton & Co. proved that with Osama at "Tarnack Farms" and other opportunities. Able Danger proved that with Atta and a few of his friends. The CIA proved it with "suspicions" about Islamic pilots in flight training schools.

You can't run an intell operation with an open book on an internet type operation.....look how leaky things in Washington are now. Much of that is probably due to insecure communications thought to be secure by the sender and intended reciever. Above all, no Democrats or NY times reporters should even have a hint it exists.

MI Ping

Intellipedia definition
"MI Ping List:" A group of former and current MI folks who reside on Freerepublic.com. Few of them comment on intelligence related threads because they are still bound by their oaths and a sense of responsibility. Most are extremely conservative and believe in the "nukem till they glow" school of diplomacy.

In other news...

The U.S. intelligence community also revealed today that it is working on a top secret version of YouTube, called "IntelliTube" which will allow workers in the intelligence industry to post videos about their private lives, short snippets from famous spy movies or even video material supplementing the latest intelligence leaks.

Exactly. And Acting on the Int is still politics as usual.

Oh god, just wait until this is hacked.

It's not hackable. It's hosted on a network that is wholly cut off from any other public network.
