IDF girds for possibility of war with Syria, Hezbollah in 2007
Haaretz ^ | By Amir Oren

Syria and Hezbollah are likely to start a war against Israel next summer, according to General Staff assessments that have been gathered during a series of meetings in recent weeks.

While there is no specific estimate concerning the timing of a potential attack, all preparations are being made to ensure maximum preparedness in advance of summer 2007.

Since the lessons of the war in Lebanon have not yet been finalized in reports, it was decided to consider 2007 as an interim period, and to make decisions concerning a multiple-year force build-up only at the end of that year.

Meanwhile, two important interim decisions were made during the recent deliberations: The development, within three years, of a system capable of intercepting 220 mm. and 302 mm. surface-to-surface rockets, of the sort that Hezbollah used to target Haifa and other towns during the recent war; and to wait to make a final decision with respect to cancellation of the Merkava tank production line.

The rocket interceptor system will be developed on the basis of existing missiles, and according to future developments of these platforms.

Regarding the Merkava, an analysis of the use of tanks during the fighting in Lebanon in the July-August campaign, and particularly the performance of the Merkava Mark-4, suggests that if properly deployed, the tank can provide its crew with better protection than in the past.

The conclusion is that the Israel Defense Forces still requires an annual supply of dozens of advanced tanks in order to replace the older, more vulnerable versions that are still in service.

I didn't read the entire piece, but factor in the Iran situation and Israel must be preparing for a major war.

A decision in Washington to withdraw the majority of its forces from Iraq will contribute to this atmosphere and will necessitate concentrating on the possibility that Iraq may become part of an eastern front comprising Iran and Syria. Military Intelligence estimate that there are 5,000 Katyushas in southern Lebanon, even after IDF mop-up operations there.

A simple plan would be if Israel finishes off Syria while the US neutralizes Iran. But we have democrats.

If the Jews keep playing around with conventional warfare against their enemy - islam, they will soon be obliterated from the face to the earth by - islam. Israel needs to mushroomize Iran or be destroyed by Iran.... or maybe Israel just wants to surrender and be subjugated ... the rich will always just move away anyway.

"screw em {Israel} onto the ash heap of history with them"

Careful. Make no mistake about the value of Israel to the US. W/o Israel, the US climbs to the very top of the list of things Muslums want to destroy. Israel will study what went wrong during the last relatively minor dust up and be much better prepared for the bigger brawls that they (and everyone) know are rapidly approaching. Israel will not go quietly either.... they have serious nukes and I'm guessing they will use them as a last resort.

how about this scenario?

We partition Iraq and because of the Dems withdraw, toward the end of our withdrawal the US agrees to refuel Israeli bombers over Iraq (no air defense grid in Iraq) and they bomb all of the Iranian nuclear sites.

In retaliation, Syria Iran and Hizbollah launch attacks on Israel.....

"they have serious nukes and I'm guessing they will use them as a last resort."

I think it was Yitzak Shamir who talked about the "Sampson Option". The Sampson Option is: If Israel knows it cannot win the war against the Muslim Terrorists, they will detonate all of their nuclear weapons as these terrorists enter Israel; thus killing themselves as they anhilate their enemies....just as Sampson did to the Philistines.

Before Israel goes to war again, they might want to get a new leader.

Olmert is NOT THE ONE TO LEAD THEM.

"Olmert is NOT THE ONE TO LEAD THEM."

I totally agree with that. I hope Binyamin Netanyahu is re-elected Prime Minister. He would kick butt.

you are a f'n dope!!!!...obviously..you have not followed history at all since 1948.....every war....Israel has had a major victory has been stolen and taken from them by the UN....the US has always been complicit in stopping the Israelis from completing the task....for example when they had taken the Suez canal..Israel was forced under UN and US pressure to give it back...when the Israelis had the egyptian third army pinned in the desert...they could have just kept them all there to die...but the UN & US forced Israel to allow the egyptians to go home....and in the latest confrontation with hezzbola...the Israelis were forced by the UN & US to stop and not finish the mission...just like the lib/dems have done with US troops in iraq....

so screw you and your stupid posting!!!! you sound like a true antisemitic lib/dem!!!!

I can agree with the bulk of your post except for the Lebanon dust up.

Israel stopped themselves, and looked weak while doing it. I am glad that they are going to upgrade there armour.

I too find it troublesome about the behavior of their pols and the way they vote when their very existence is at stake. And if their is another hezzie war in Lebanon what will happen or how will the UN butt scratchers impact the battle plan. Something in me says since they didn't uphold the resolution they are but targets but then it their bosses and not them that are the CS problems.

1) Israel probably has no leader capable of making the bold decisions. Bibi talks a good game, but he is all talk. Avigdor Lieberman, who has indicated that Israel should nuke the Arab world, might be the only one with the guts to do what it takes. Israel really needs another Yitzhak Shamir.

2) The Samson Option is actually Israel's (supposed) threat to take down all its enemies if she is destroyed. I assume that this would not only mean Iran and neighboring Arab states, but probably even Europe as justice for the first Shoah (and 2000 years of persecution before that) and then for helping the Arabs with the second one. If Israel's nuclear arsenal is as large as is commonly believed, she could do both.

Even for those who were not targets, Israel's likely nuking of Middle East oil installations would create a complete world economic collapse for decades.
