Senator Maltese Barely Holds GOP Seat in Queens

Republican State Senator Serphin Maltese, the head of the Queens County GOP, and one of the founders of the Conservative Party, barely held his seat after Tuesday's election. Only 700 votes separated the pro life Senator from his Democratic opponent, Baldeo, whom some voters mistakenly thought was Italian! Maltese is one of the strongest pro lifers and conservatives in a State Senate that is being mismanaged and misdirected by Joe Bruno. Bruno, you may recall, blames local GOP losses on George Bush. The "George" he should blame is his pal, Governor George Pataki, who has not gone to bat for any of the GOP candidates. Hopefully, Maltese will be able to hold the seat in the next election. However, this election should be a wake up call to conservatives in Queens.

I would imagine that the devout Conservative Catholic population drops by the day there in Queens, seems to be the trend here in the once heavily Catholic Boston area.

There are conservatives in Queens?

That is the best kept secret since the Manhattan Project!

Yes, many of the older Italians are Republicans and some of the younger Irish are also. But these neighborhoods are changing.

Being from Queens, I am surprised (happily so)

Isn't Queens considered the most liberal Borough in N.Y.?

No, way! Look at MANHATTAN - Zero elected Republicans! And the ones they used to have were the Rockefeller types and now even they can't be elected. We have three elected GOPers from Queens and used to have six. Rapidly shrinking.

I used to belong to a couple of GOP clubs - however, they mostly attract older retired people. They need young blood, they need to do outreach or they will go out of existence. A number of new immigrants from places such as Bangladesh are Republicans and some people from India, also. They have to recruit, recruit, recruit.

Yes, I think all the young Republicans just move South or West, like I did!

It's getting to the point where the parties are no longer going to be identified based on ideology, but merely on a regional basis.

Bruno has the nerve to blame Bush rather than himself for our terrible losses in New York. He tried to bail out that awful Nicky Spano and Spano lost anyway - good riddance! I hope Bruno gets the boot. And Mondello???? Another big loser who ruined Long Island - ruined it!

I hope the south holds and the west does not fall - we lost the Montana Senate seat, which is a shame. It appears that Pennsylvania is lost now for Republicans. A shame.

I must add to this thread: Maltese has stepped down as County Chairman. And there used to be a GOP club in my neighborhood and it has disappeared. The lack of representation is unbelievable - no presence, no nothing! I am disgusted.

My sister was the Democrat who ran against Serph one year. (She got the endorsement of the NYT. Surprise.)

Serph was the chairman of the Board of Trustees at my old High School, where they organized a Pro-Bush Police rally in 1988. (My sister complained it was actually a pro-death penalty rally.)

She likes living in a safe neighborhood, but would do everything possible to undermine its safety by handcuffing the cops.

Johnson won the special election on long island.

to be honest, these pro-life positions do nothing for these candidates in NYS - because now the Dems turn on that issue and run stem-cell ads against these candidates, they ran those constantly on long island against OConnell.

The stem cell ads - there is no proof that embryonic stem cell research helps patients. What the Dems are doing is turning the debate from late term abortion, which is a loser for them, to early abortion. We have to fight back. A person is a person no matter how small and sick people don't need snake oil!

I know that, I agree. But the Dems are now taking the pro-life issue, and extending it to stem cells - and the sheeple believe they are going to live forever if they can get stem cells.
