actually, it has been my experience over a period of thirty years that you are incorrect in claiming most people can't stand the smell of cigars - the inverse is true.
i am amazed that many folks who can't stand the smell of cigarettes always comment how nice a cigar smells. perhaps you only have experience with cheap stogies and not with real top of the line cigars made with quality tobacco???
i have had *numerous* non-smokers comment on how nice the smoke from my cigars smells, and have *never* had a non-smoker complain about the smell.
again, my suspicion is that those who get most upset about smoking are probably those most in need of sitting back and enjoying a cigar and try to get a sense of perspective back into their lives...

Please take the time to actually read what he is saying; this article has to do with CIGARS, not Marlboros and Camels. Yours is the knee-jerk reaction that Prager is talking about. As he said, you don't inhale a cigar, unlike cigarettes. I also respectfully disagree with the assertion that cigars are addictive. I have my daily cigar (have never had a cigarette in my life) and the evenngs when I am unable to have one, it's no big deal and I don't crave one, except that I really miss the relaxation of the process. Also, I don't crave one during the entire day.

I would, again, whole-heartedly disagree with the scent of cigar and pipe smoke. Even as a child, I despised cigarette smoke (and still do) but have always loved the smell of a good cigar. To each their own.
And, the majority of cigar smokers that I know tend to enjoy there pleasure as a solitary pursuit that allows them to unwind from a busy day and only rarely with a group of like-minded aficionados.

"Common sense tells me that breathing smoke into the human lungs is an unhealthy habit."That may well be, but you either read right over this from the article or chose to ignore it: "Most important, we don't inhale."

And I am saddened by all the young people in the convenience store line ahead of me spending their money and their health on Marlboros and Camels. Smoking is a dirty unhealthy, and addictive habit. And I'm saddened by all the old people in front of me at the convenience store spending their money on lottery tickets, but to each their own.

I don't know why one vice is answered with another. Everyone wants to talk about some other vice and say that's the really bad or annoying one. I really don't want my kid to be a compulsive gambler, an alcoholic, or a smoker. It seems we could all agree on that.
I'm not a smoker hater, both my parents smoked and I never stop someone who wants to smoke around me. But I have noticed that a discussion of the ill effects of smoking is something that smokers do NOT want to hear. They tune it out totally, which I think is a function of the addiction.

"I'm one of those who wouldn't date a woman just because she's a smoker."
I'm an anti-smoking poster on here, but in my youger days I think there were only a few things more seductive and sexy than a woman smoking a cigarette. I anm sure that "cool" or "hot" look is what gets lots of girls into smoking. Having said that, logic tells me smoking is an addictive and unhealthy habit and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, including a hot date.

Sorry, you are mistaken. I re-read the article and he specifically says that what he is writing also applies to cigarette smokers, although he personally dislikes cigarettes. I listen to his show as well, love him, and know his arguments on this very well. I realize there is an issue of laws here, but even conservatives need to DISCOURAGE young people from smoking. Cancer is not liberal or conservative. Trust me, my wife is very conservative, her cancer is not political.

I smoked cigars through much of the 1980's and early 1990's. This was back when you could smoke in the office. And for some reason the two bosses I had in those years both smoked cigars in the office. We also drank a few at lunch many days. It was nice to return to the office and smoke a cigar. In the 80's I worked in Toronto and picked up cigars at a Davidoff shop that stocked Cuban and Dominican cigars. I would never have more than one a day.
I stopped smoking largely because I couldn't smoke a cigar without inhaling. Don't know how to do it any other way. Inhaling cigars is obviously bad for your health and I took much better care of myself despite the smoking back then. I also had young kids (all adults now) and wouldn't dream of smoking at home or in front of the kids. I haven't had a cigar in years and don't miss it although the smell of a good cigar is still one of the great smells along with fresh cut grass and a spring rain that I enjoy.

Of course, I love camping and I have inhaled and been coated with the smoke of many a camp fire. Doesn't mean it's healthy. In fact, I've read those suspended ash particles are among the worst for your health.
But I do NOT purchase and smoke two or three packs of campfires a day, and I have resisted the urge to stand in front of my office building in the freezing cold just so I could inhale a campfire.

I really don't want my kid to be a compulsive gambler, an alcoholic, or a smoker. It seems we could all agree on that. Who are you, or I for the matter, to tell people how to live their lives? Worry about yourself and those closest to you. If we all did that we'd all be better off. Police power, like in the new smoke bans, is a poor substitute for a legitimately virtuous society. Raise your kids, don't leave it to the state.

People should be able to smoke anything they want. And health insurance companies and/or Medicare/medicaid should be free to not pay a damn cent, or charge then 100x premiums of a nonsmoker. just my humble .02

Mmmmmm, cigars!
I quit smoking cigerettes in '98, on the day of the Freeper March for Freedom.
I've smoked cigars since then, and as Dennis notes, I can go for days without one, with no issues.
I get all my smokes from JR's www.jrcigars.com . Though I think they started in the NYC area, they have multiple stores and their shipping outlet here in NC.
I tend to smoke what I guess would be considered second tier sticks. If they get rated at all in Cigar Afficiando it's usually a low number compared to the famous brands, but they are less than half the price.
I smoke mostly robustos, I like the kick and a short cigar is often all I have time for. JR offers lots of weekly specials which involve the name brands, so my humidors always have a nice stock of all sizes and brands for special occasions and guests.
My current everyday smoke is a Plasencia robusto, about $45 a box.
When it's time for a cognac, the Corvosier comes out.
