Abduction Called Hoax

Published: Nov 21, 2006

BARTOW - A woman was arrested Monday after she told authorities she lied about being kidnapped, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said that from the beginning, Gretchen Morales' story was sketchy. The 31-year-old Davenport woman told detectives she was abducted from her garage Thursday morning and could not remember anything else.

A babysitter reported her missing. The sheriff's office spent 16 hours searching for Morales.

She was found that night in St. Petersburg after she called 911.

During an interview Monday afternoon, the sheriff's office said she told detectives she lied.

She told detectives she hitched a ride to Lakeland and then took cabs to Busch Gardens and St. Petersburg. In St. Petersburg she became concerned about her children and wanted to go home about 10 p.m., the sheriff's office said.

Morales was charged with filing a false police report, child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a child. She was expected to be booked into the Polk County Jail.

Local news says she did this was an attempt to get her ex boyfriend back. I kinda doubt its gonna work though.

This does show his good judgement in getting the heck away from her though.

Maybe she'll find a new 'companion' in jail.
